Burmese Muslims given two-child limit

Burmese Muslims given two-child limit

November 5, 2013
Kartik Shuklapaksha 1, Kaliyug Varsha 5115

The two-child policy will be mandatory in Buthidaung and Maundaw provinces
Burma : Muslims in a province of Burma have been ordered not to have more than two children in an attempt by the government to stop Buddhist attacks on Muslims.
State officials said the two-child limit in the state of Rakhine would ease tensions between Buddhists and their Muslim Rohingya neighbours.
Local officials said the new measure was part of a policy that will also ban polygamyin two Rakhine townships that border Bangladesh and have the highest Muslim populations. The townships, Buthidaung and Maundaw, are about 95% Muslim.
The measure was enacted a week ago after a government-appointed commission investigating the violence issued proposals to ease tensions, which included family planning programs to stem population growth among minority Muslims, said Rakhine state spokesman Win Myaing. The commission also recommended doubling the number of security forces in the volatile region.
"The population growth of Rohingya Muslims is 10 times higher than that of the Rakhine (Buddhists)," Win Myaing said. "Overpopulation is one of the causes of tension."
Sectarian violence in Burma first flared nearly a year ago in Rakhine state between the region's Rakhine Buddhists and Muslim Rohingya. Mobs of Buddhists armed with machetes razed thousands of Muslim homes, leaving hundreds of people dead and forcing 125,000 to flee, mostly Muslims.
Since the violence, religious unrest has developed into a campaign against the country's Muslim communities in other regions.
Containing the strife has posed a serious challenge to President Thein Sein's reformist government as it attempts to institute political and economic liberalisation after nearly half a century of harsh military rule. It has also tarnished the image of opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi, who has been criticised for failing to speak out strongly in defence of the country's embattled Muslim community.
Win Myaing said authorities had not yet determined how the measures will be enforced, but the two-child policy will be mandatory in Buthidaung and Maundaw. The policy will not apply yet to other parts of Rakhine state, which have smaller Muslim populations.
"One factor that has fuelled tensions between the Rakhine public and [Rohingya] populations relates to the sense of insecurity among many Rakhines stemming from the rapid population growth of the [Rohingya], which they view as a serious threat," the government-appointed commission said in a report issued last month.
Predominantly Buddhist Burma does not include the Rohingya as one of its 135 recognised ethnicities. It considers them to be illegal immigrants from Bangladesh and denies them citizenship. Bangladesh says the Rohingya have been living in Myanmar for centuries and should be recognised as citizens. Muslims account for about 4% of Myanmar's roughly 60 million people.

Strong blow given by activists protecting cows !

Pune (Maharashtra) : National Green Tribunal has given order bringing stay on unauthorised slaughter-house run without proper licence under Indira Gandhi fly-over bridge at Pimpri. Next hearing in this case will be held on 13th November. Shri. Nitin Vatkar from ‘Gou-vansh Raksha Samiti’ has filed a case with the Tribunal. (Congratulations to Shri. Vatkar of  ‘Gou-vansh Raksha Samiti’ for staging movement against unauthorised slaughter house ! – Editor, Dainik Sanatan Prabhat)
1.’Gou-bhakta (cow-devotees/ patrons)’ had given a fight with unity and closed down unauthorised slaughter house in 2012.
2.Within a year however, the slaughter-house was started again without taking required permission of Maharashtra Pollution Control Board. (Slaughter-house started without proper permissions indicates lack of control over criminals by the Government administration. – Editor, Dainik Sanatan Prabhat)
3. ‘Gou-bhakta’ who raised voice against the slaughter-house were, however, not extended any cooperation by Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation. Their demands were not even registered. (Why the Municipal Commissioner of Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation, known to be prompt in taking action against unauthorised constructions, does not take initiative in closing down unauthorised slaughter-house ? Or is he also affected with the ailment of appeasement of fanatics ?- Editor, Dainik Sanatan Prabhat)
4. Finally, Shri. Nitin Vatkar of ‘Gou-vansh Raksha Samiti’ filed a case with ‘national Green Tribunal’ on 26th October. Since the Tribunal found truth in Shri. Vatkar’s demand, stay has been given immediately against the slaughter-house.
5. A case has been filed against Maharashtra Government, Maharashtra Pollution Control Board, ‘Indian Animals Protection Committee’, Chennai, Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Commissioner and Veterinary Officers.

Bangladesh Hindus attacked in Pabna; Jihadis use false Facebook post for rampage

Bangladesh Hindus attacked in Pabna; Jihadis use false Facebook post for rampage

November 3, 2013
Ashwin Amawasya, Kaliyug Varsha 5115

Jihadis also vandalised the idol in a temple
Pabna (Bangladesh) : For Bonogram bazaar in Santhia upazila, about 40 kilometres from Pabna sadar, the day started with the usual hustle and bustle.
But things started to change around 10:00am as a group of people began distributing photocopies of what they said was a “Facebook page”. They claimed one Rajib Saha had maligned Prophet Mohammad (pbuh) in the page.
“None was given the chance to ask whether or not it was a faked Facebook posting,” said an eyewitness.
Rajib, son of Babul Saha, a shop owner in the bazaar, is a class-X student of Bonogram Miapur High School.
Soon, hundreds of people stormed Babul Saha’s house in Bonogram. Unable to find the boy, the mob got hold of Babul and took him to the bazaar. There, he was warned that he and his son would be tried for “defaming the prophet”.
Despite protesting repeatedly that his son was innocent, Babul was mercilessly hit and kicked upon. At one stage, some locals intervened to save him and confined him to a shop.
In the meanwhile, another gang, more aggressive and violent, set fire to Babul’s house. Later, more gangs joined in to attack the predominantly Hindu village and vandalised about 26 homesteads.
On information, over 150 Rab and police personnel arrived at the bazaar. As they brought Babul out of the shop, the mob started throwing brick chips and other objects at them.
It took the law enforcers over an hour to rescue Babul and take him into their custody at Ataikula Police Station.

Jihadis tore apart the corrugated iron sheet walls of a Hindu house at Bonogram in Santhia of Pabna yesterday.
Talking to The Daily Star at the police station, Babul claimed the men who attacked his house belong to local units of BNP and Jamaat.
Asked about his son, he said Rajib was on the run to save life.
“He was preparing for SSC examination. He can’t do anything like what the people here are alleging,” he said, adding the boy is a meritorious student.
Meanwhile, people from different villages blockaded the Pabna-Dhaka highway for over five hours till 5:00pm.
As police tried to remove the barricade, the violent crowds attacked them with brick chips and sticks. The cops had to charge batons and fire several teargas shells.
All the top police and district administration officials were on the spot trying to defuse the crisis.
The way the Hindu houses in Bonogram were attacked yesterday bore an eerie similarity with the communal violence against the Buddhist community in Ramu on September 29 last year. A Buddhist youth, Uttam Barua, was framed with a fake Facebook page carrying anti-Islamic contents to incite the communal violence.
Yesterday’s incident also followed the trend of recent Jamaat- Shibir-BNP attacks on the Hindu minorities across the country.
Locals of Bonogram said some known faces of Jamaat, Shibir and BNP led the attacks throughout the day.
Rajib’s classmate Rocky said, “We are sure the allegation against Rajib is cooked up by a vested quarter.”
The Daily Star has found that the Facebook page whose photocopies were used to incite the attacks on the Bonogram Hindu community has no links with Rajib.
The name of this page, written in Bangla, denigrates the prophet and therefore it is unprintable in the newspaper.
Opened on September 14, the page got 420 “likes” as of yesterday evening.
It does contain hateful posts, majority of which was issued by the administrator. Some people gave negative reactions to these posts, asking others to refrain from liking this page.
In fact, there was no single comment supporting the posts.
Interestingly, the page itself gave 30 “likes” on other pages that include “Ami Gorbito, Ami Musalman”, “Sammilito Islami Mancha”, Hadith of the Day and several other Islamic pages.
Again, it likes Atheist Bangladesh Fans and Dhormockery, Gonojagoron Mancha and Imran H Sarkar and at the same time Amar Desh acting editor Mahmudur Rahman.
It also likes a page called Moulavibazar High School.
Additional District Magistrate Munshi Muniruzzaman said so far they did not find any substance in the claims made against the schoolboy.
He said steps would be taken against the culprits under information technology act after probe.
“We know who attacked and vandalised our houses.” Paritosh Kumar, a resident of Bonogram Sahapara. But he would not mention any name.
Around 250 Hindu families live in Bonogram village, he said, adding that some 25 to 30 houses were completely ravaged. “Many other houses were also attacked.”
Bishnu Saha, 80, said she had never imagined anybody would destroy her house this way.
Chandan Kumar Chakrabarti, president of Hindu Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council, said, “Conspirators are out to create a situation so that the Hindus can be attacked.”
He said a party involved in communal politics might have been behind the Bonogram violence.

Hindu organisations to formulate separate code of conduct for Hindus : HJS

Hindu organisations to formulate separate code of conduct for Hindus : HJS

November 2, 2013
Ashwin Krushnapaksha 14, Kaliyug Varsha 5115

Pune (Maharashtra) : ‘Political parties take no cognizance of Hindus and pro-Hindu organisations and always take them for granted. No agenda is prepared for welfare of Hindus. In the background of elections, therefore, a separate code of conduct will be formulated for Hindus and pro-Hindu organisations. In future, vote for people who really work for Hindus’ interest and do not vote for those who just talk about Hindus’ interests.’ The above appeal was made by Shri. Sunil Ghanavat, the Coordinator of Hindu Janajagruti Samiti (HJS) for Maharashtra. He was speaking in a press conference held on 28th October after conclusion of regional Hindu Convention to give its details. Advocate Devadas Shinde, Secretary of ‘Hindu Vidhidnya Parishad’, Shri. Gajanan Keskar, Pune District Coordinator of HJS, Shri. Shekhar Tandale of Sanatan Sanstha and Shri. Umakant Kendre of Hindu Mahasabha were present on the occasion. Shri. Ghanavat gave information on the resolutions passed by pro-Hindu activists, outcome of the Convention and policy formed by pro-Hindu activists under ‘common point program’.

Firm opposition to anti-superstitions Act !

All pro-Hindu activists unanimously decided to oppose the anti-superstitions Act. Shri. Ghanavat said in this connection, “The Government passed anti-superstitions Ordinance to get sympathy of reformists after Dr. Dabholkar’s killing. This anti-Hindu Act will be opposed under ‘common point program’ planned by pro-Hindu activists. In a Government magazine called ‘Lok-rajya’, an article has been published in the name of one administrative officer. All the points given in this article have been already included in a book published by Shyam Manav few months back. Thus, Shyam Manav’s contentions are published in the name of an administrative officer. HJS’ view is that the Act should be cancelled. HJS opposed this Act in the past, opposes it now and will oppose it even in future.” Advocate Devdas Shinde also warned that awareness would be created amongst advocates from 288 talukas and 48 districts of Maharashtra and the Government would be forced to withdraw the said Act.”

IBN Lokmat’s reporter asks cynical questions

“You are making demand of Hindu Rashtra; means don’t you believe in Constitution? Was the killing of Dr. Dabholkar condemned in this Convention; or are you trying to create a vote bank of Hindus ?”, asked reporter of IBN Lokmat.

Corrupt police officer from ATS sentenced to two years imprisonment along with his two associates !

  • True nature of ATS squad

  • In Hindu Rashtra, such police will be asked to undertake rigorous spiritual practice by way of punishment and their property will be confiscated !

Issue of taking bribe of Rs. 10 lakhs !

Mumbai – On 29th October, the Special Court passed a verdict declaring former Police Inspector (PI), Arun Khanvilkar from State anti-terrorist Squad (ATS) guilty and sentenced him to two years imprisonment. He was found guilty for accepting bribe of Rs. 10 lakhs for not implicating a person wrongly in one case. (There is possibility of unnecessarily implicating Hindus even in Malegaon bomb blast case; in fact, Hindu accused in this case, have time and again made such claim. Arun Khanvilkar has been involved in brutally beating Sadhvi Pradnya Singh and other Hindu co-accused, besides being a likely accused in missing case of Dilip Patedar; therefore, such police officers should be thoroughly interrogated as it will bring forth more serious cases and true face of terrorism will be exposed. – Editor, Dainik Sanatan Prabhat)
  1. Chetan Desai and Sanjay Kakkar, two associates of Khanvilkar have also been judged as guilty and sentenced to 18 months imprisonment; besides, Khanvilkar has been charged with fine of Rs. 1 lakh and Desai and Kakkar with fine of Rs. 50,000/- each.
  2. As claimed by police, Khanvilkar had raided a club in December 2009 and arrested the petitioner and later, demanded Rs. 20 lakhs for not to implicate him in false case which was finally negotiated to Rs. 10 lakhs.
  3. As decided, the petitioner paid half of the amount to Khanvilkar immediately; but filed a case with anti-corruption bureau. On 10th February 2010, a trap was laid and Chetan Desai who had come to collect the balance amount was arrested by officers of anti-corruption bureau.

Hindus should not forget the following offences of Arun Khanvilkar !

  1. Arun Khanvilkar behaved very rudely with Dr. Uday Dhuri, the Convener of Hindu Janajagruti Samiti (HJS) ! In the year 2004, HJS had held demonstrations against denigration of Deities in a Marathi play titled ‘Vastraharan’. PI, Arun Khanvilkar, then working with Bhoiwada police station called Dr. Uday Dhuri to the police station. Then he encircled Dr. Dhuri with his staff and told him very impudently that he would put his foot on Ganapati and see what happened.
  2. Khanvilkar beat up Dr. Dhuri, Convener of HJS who had gone for submitting a representation !
In the year 2008, Dr. Uday Dhuri, the Convener of HJS for Mumbai was called to Kala Chowki police station in connection with investigations of one case. That time, PI Khanvilkar from ATS office had arguments with Dr. Dhuri and had even slapped him.

Crash course to show India's Christians how to vote

Crash course to show India's Christians how to vote

November 1, 2013
Ashwin Krushnapaksha 13, Kaliyug Varsha 5115
Great hope is being pinned on a recently launched crash course in electoral politics for the Christian, particularly the Catholic, population in India to prepare them for the general elections scheduled for early 2014.
The object is to counter and, if possible, defeat right wing Hindu nationalist groups who are making a determined bid to wrest political power in New Delhi in the general elections. The Church leadership and laity are being told how they can synergize their voting strength in select constituencies in collaboration with other groups in so as not to divide what is said to be the “secular vote”.
This, it is presumed, will help defeat the political parties with a history of antagonism towards religious minorities.
This political exercise has been undertaken by a small group in the Archdiocese of Delhi working with representatives of Protestant churches and Muslim religious leaders, apart from a handful of civil society activists.
But members of the core lay team spearheading this campaign in applied democracy have their work cut out. They face problems ranging from rank incredulity on the one hand to the passive disinterest of people who feel they are too few to make any impact. The upshot is that many feel they will not be missed if they don’t vote. This feeling of resignation could have far reaching consequences.
The Christian community in India is so small as to seem irrelevant. At 25 million people, it accounts for only 2.3 per cent of the national population, or one fifth of India’s largest and politically powerful Muslim minority community. While there might be more Christians than Sikhs, the Sikh community is concentrated in Punjab from where they control the state legislature and government, and can have their voice heard decisively in the country’s parliament.
In contrast, the states where Christians are a substantial proportion of the population – Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Goa and Kerala -- are themselves politically miniscule, with a total of less than 30 seats in the 543-member Lok Sabha. Uttar Pradesh alone, for example, has 80 seats.
Historically, the Christian community, with some individuals as exceptions, has been considered close to the Indian National Congress. It was loyal to Mahatma Gandhi and to Jawaharlal Nehru, the first prime minister of the country. And over the decades it has to an extent remained loyal to Indira Gandhi and her Nehru-Gandhi clan, which controls the ruling Congress Party, though no one of the clan holds any ministerial position at present.
The opposition parties, especially the Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party, have jeered at Congress Party president Sonia Gandhi for her Italian Catholic origins, but the Christian community itself has derived no advantage from this connection.
There have been no Christian chief ministers of any major state in the past, other than of the tiny three in the north east, and Goa and Kerala on the west coast.  In other areas, disempowerment of Tribal Christians continues to be a sad fact of life, and Dalit Christians in particular feel betrayed by the Congress-ruled federal government.
There is a deep seated feeling that development funds for religious minorities have been sluiced to the Muslim community, deemed to be a “vote bank” of Congress and Samajwadi political parties, at the cost of the silent Christians. This by itself failed to arouse the community for years.
The turning point, one feels, was the anti-Christian violence in Kandhamal in Orissa state in 2007 and 2008. The sheer magnitude of the violence shocked the community and its religious and secular leadership out of their torpor.
There had been more than 20,000 “communal” riots, or religion-based acts of mass violence, since 1947, but the victims in almost all of them were Muslims. The Sikh community was the victim of mass violence in 1984 following the assassination of prime minister Indira Gandhi by her Sikh bodyguards.
Though there had been thousands of sporadic and isolated acts of violence against pastors, priests and nuns, there had been just one case of mass violence, and that in Tamil Nadu. Kandhamal suddenly made the Christian community aware of its vulnerability.
The lack of an adequate and comforting response from civil society and political parties also made it clear to the Christians that they really had no political voice, and had to find one.
It is impossible for the Christian community to become politically viable on its own strength. But many in the community have come to realize that they can be a force-multiplier if they act in concert, and perhaps in alliance, with other like-minded groups.
The cementing factor is the common concern against the rise in religious fundamentalism triggered by the right wing Hindu nationalist Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh and its political wing, the Bharatiya Janata Party. It rules in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Punjab [in a coalition with the Akali Dal of the Sikhs].
The recent emergence of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, widely presumed to have encouraged a veritable genocide of Muslims in 2002 in his state, as a prime ministerial candidate in 2014 has brought a rare sense of urgency.
Christian leaders realize that with Muslims and other “secular” entities, they can make a difference in perhaps as many as 140 parliament constituencies, which could be decisive when it comes to the formation of a future coalition government.
The Muslim community is known for its “strategic voting” which maximizes its presence by giving a winning edge to select candidates who have the best chance of defeating anyone seen as being communal or sectarian.
The call now is for the Christian community to adopt and join this concept of strategic voting, and help the electoral prospects of candidates – and they can be of any of the political parties – who have the best potential of defeating candidates with a known communal bias or track record of hostility towards religious minorities.  It is not an easy task to educate a Christian community scattered widely across the country, split into denominations, cultural rites and scores of language and cultural groups.
The time is short, the resources very limited, and the experience extremely little for extensive political mobilization at the grassroots. But the collective adrenalin is pumping high, as early reports come in of a swing of the young and the middle class towards Narendra Modi, with his known animosity towards religious minorities.
Perhaps nothing may come out of this exercise in a worse case scenario. But the newly acquired political awareness will be useful in the future building of a community that is aware and proud of its identity and knows how to assert its rights for development and security equity under the constitution.
John Dayal is the general secretary of the All India Christian Council and a member of the Indian government’s National Integration Council.

US Congress celebrates Diwali for the first time

US Congress celebrates Diwali for the first time

October 31, 2013
Ashwin Krushnapaksha 12,Kaliyug Varsha 5115
The first ever Diwali festival was celebrated at the US Congress today amidst chanting of Vedic mantras by a Hindu priest.
Over two dozen influential lawmakers along with eminent Indian-Americans gathered at the Capitol Hill to lit the traditional “diyas”.
The event – the first of its kind event at the Capitol Hill – was organised by the two Co-Chairs of the Congressional Caucus on India and Indian Americans, Congressmen Joe Crowley and Peter Roskam in recognition of increasing presence of the Indian-American community.
The occasion was also used to highlight significance of India-US relationship.
“I have come here to say Happy Diwali,” said Nancy Pelosi, Leader of the Democratic Party in the House of Representatives. “United States owes a great debt of gratitude to India. Because our civil rights movement was built on the non-violent movement in India. Martin Luther King studied there, spoke there. We are blessed not only by that legacy, but also by the presence of so many Indo-Americans in our country,” Pelosi said.

Roskam said Indian Americans are an example of an enormous diaspora that is incredibly influential. “You have the ability to bring together people from both sides of the isle in ways that are powerful and significant,” he said.
“When we look at the relationship between the United States and India moving forward it is a wonderful relationship that has a great thing in store,” said Roskam, who along with other lawmakers were welcomed at the historic event with red tilak, jasmine garland. A Hindu priest presented them a traditional shawl amidst chanting of Vedic mantras.
Starting his brief remarks with ‘Jai Hind’ Congressman Ed Royce, Chairman of the powerful House Foreign Affairs Committee said the relationship between India and the United States is strengthening.
“Our goal should be to increase and deepen this relationship with counter-terrorism co-operation, with more trade and investment and trying to make sure that we strengthen our ally India. And that is our intention here, whether we are Republican or a Democrat, our goal is to deepen this relationship,” he said.
Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard, the first Hindu American lawmaker, diversity in the Congress is indicative of the special nature of Diwali itself. “It is celebration of righteousness,” she said.
Ami Bera, who is the only Indian American in the current Congress, this is an incredible Diwali celebration. “It is great to be one Indian American in the Congress, but at our second, fifth Diwali celebration, we want to see more members of the Diaspora elected to the House of Representatives. We want to see deepening of this relationship as we move forward,” Bera said.
Congresswoman, Carolyn B Maloney, who had recently launched a campaign for issuing a Diwali stamp, rued that the US Postal Service had recently turned down the request. As such she urged the Indian American community to work together in this regard. “It is time to have Diwali stamp,” she said.
“India and the United States have so much in common,” said Congressman Elliot Engel, Ranking member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee and appreciated the contribution of Indian Americans in the country.
The outgoing Indian Ambassador to the US, Nirupama Rao, also spoke on the occasion, along with other Congressmen including Mike Honda, Sheila Jackson Lee, David Price,? Charles Bernard “Charlie” Rangel, and Steny Hoyer.
