BHUBANESWAR: The State Government today admitted 46 farmers committed suicide in the State during two years, 200910 and 201011, for different reasons.
In a written reply to a question from Pratap Chandra Sarangi (Ind) and Ramchandra Kadam (Cong), Agriculture Minister Damodar Rout said that 27 out of the 46 farmers who committed suicide had availed of loans from different banks while the reason behind the death of others was not available. While three farmers ended their lives in Balasore district, four committed suicide in Bargarh. But the cause behind the suicide of farmers from Bargarh district is yet to be ascertained. Two each committed suicide in Balangir and Cuttack districts. Boudh reported a lone case. The farmer, Uograsena Mahanandia, had taken a crop loan of Rs 9,000 and goatery loan of Rs 30,000.
Two such cases were reported from Ganjam district. The reason behind the death of Banchhanidhi Pradhan of Srichandanpur village by consuming poison has been stated to be due to quarrel within the family.
