Villagers block road after famer’s suicide
Dhenkanal

After Auja Dehury, 22, of village Dassipur in Kankadahad block of Dhenkanal district committed suicide by consuming pesticide late on Wednesday night, the villagers blocked the road at Mahabirod for two hours on Thursday with his body protesting the "anti-farmer’ agriculture policy of the Government causing serial suicides of farmers in the State.

The agitating farmers withdrew the road blockade only after Kankadahad BDO Bidhnu Prasad Acharya and Inspector of Parjang police station assured them of possible steps for compensating the loss of crops of the deceased farmer.

Sources said Dehury cultivated cauliflower in one acre of his land last year borrowing agricultural loan of Rs 1 lakh from a bank and another Rs 50,000 hand loan from villagers.

But unfortunately, while his cauliflower crop was damaged due to insects, the paddy he had cultivated in the rest of his one-and-a-half acres upland was lost due to lack of water.

On Wednesday, when he was preparing the bed for re-cropping of cauliflower, the private financers forced him to repay their money.

Depressed over this as he was in no position to repay the loan he took his own life.

Dehury had got married only six months back.

Meanwhile, when the Kankadahad BDO, the Deputy Director Agriculture and Deputy Director Horticulture visited the village to assess the crop loss, only the Maa Mangala Self Help Group claimed that Dehury had borrowed Rs 20,000 from it.
