POLICE BOOK REHMAN FOR UNLAWFUL ACTS

Cuttack 18/12-Suspected al-Qaeda terrorist Abdul Rehman, arrested from here by the Delhi Police on Wednesday, was on Friday booked under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act by the Odisha police after detecting several bank accounts operated by him and receiving money from “doubtful” overseas sources.
Soon after his arrest on Wednesday, Rehman, who was running a madrasa at his village near here, was taken to New Delhi on the same day by the Delhi Police after obtaining a transit remand from a local court. However, the Odisha police began investigation into his antecedents and booked him under UAP Act after obtaining sanction from the central government.
“A case has been registered against Rehman at the Jagatpur police station here under several sections of UAP Act of 1967,” informed Cuttack city DCP Sanjib Arora, adding that bank accounts operated by him for last ten years are under scrutiny. He, however, refused to divulge details but added that prima facie it appears that Rehman was engaged in unlawful activities.
Sources said the investigating police have already detected three such accounts of Rehman operated in banks located here itself. One of the accounts verified so far has revealed that a large amount from a “doubtful source in London” was credited in his account recently, the sources said.
Meanwhile the Cuttack district administration, after finding that Rehman was running the madrasa illegally, has decided to repatriate the students enrolled there to their parents. Over 80 students, most of them from neighbouring Jharkhand, were studying here in precarious conditions.
