Orissa floods a result of mismanagement: BJP

Bhubaneswar, Sep 13 : Senior BJP leader and former Minister Bijaya Mohapatra today alleged that the Naveen Patnaik government has mishandled the Hirakud water management system resulting in high floods in Mahanadi and Brahmni river system.

Addressing newsmen here, Mr Mohapatra said the current flood was not only confined to Coastal Orissa but has also brought miseries to lakhs of people in Western Orissa for the first time and all this happened due to mismanagement of handling the Hirakud reservoir water system.

He said Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, who has been holding the Water Resources department for the
last one decade, must clarify as to whether he had reviewed the Hirakud water management during September and analyse the sattelite and Indian Meteorological Department's observations from September 1 to September 10 last.

The BJP leader said as per the rule curve of the Hirakud Dam, the water level in the reservoir should be kept at 619 feet by September one but the Dam authority allowed the water level to cross 624 feet and did not release the water into Mahanadi when the river bed was dry.

The Naveen Patnaik government, he alleged, also did not take into account the observation of the IMD and satellite pictures on the weather situation and ignored the input provided by the Irrigation department of Chhatishgarh government.

The mishandling of the Hirakud Water system, he alleged, led to high floods in Mahanadi and Brahmni river system affecting over 40 lakhs people in 19 districts and demanded that Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik being the Irrigation Minister must respond to the allegations.
