NAGERCOIL, JULY 5, 2012 : Children from the Stella Mary’s Students’ Home talk to DSW officials| ExpressA total of 65 children, mostly from Madurai district, including 12 who were affected by diarrhoea after taking contaminated food, were rescued by the District Social Welfare (DSW) officials from an unregistered children’s home functioning at Kanyakumari near here on Wednesday

On Wednesday, 12 boys were admitted to the Kanyakumari GH with diarrhoea. During enquiry it was found out that the kids were inmates of an unregistered home, Stella Mary’s Students’ Home, functioning at Siluvai Nagar near Kanyakumari railway station.
Following an anonymous call, DSW officials carried out an inspection of the home and found out that it was not registered under the Juvenile Justice (Care andProtection of Children) Act 2000.
A total of 48 boys and 17 girls, aged between 1 and 17, were housed in the home run by Fr Kumar Mosses, said DSW officer Devi Kumari.The inmates of the home were mainly from Karumathoor in Madurai district, Paramakudi, Kumbakona, Karisalpatti,Nariyampatti and Kanyakumari, said A Maluk Mudali, member of Kanyakumari District Child Welfare Committee.
The children told the officials that they were not even permitted to take bath regularly and were allowed to wash their clothes only once a week. No proper food was given and on Wednesday 12 children turned ill after they consumed the contaminated food, said Maluk Mudali.
The affected children are now stable after treatment, said Devi Kumari.
