In a bid to create awareness among the tribals about their various rights, the State Vanvasi Kalyan Ashram will hold a campaign, Janajati Adhikar Sachetanata Abhiyan, from September 20 to October 10 on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the Ashram and 150th birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda.
At a Press meet here on Monday, Ashram working president Jagdish Prasad Mishra said that even after 66 years of the Independence, the schedule tribes are deprived of their legitimate developmental facilities and natural rights on water, land and forests.
Besides, he demanded provision of tribal rights including rights on rehabilitation and resettlement of displaced, reservation facilities, rights to preserve and protect the traditional faith and culture, right to employment and livelihood and rights on profit from the mines and minerals.
The awareness drive aims to cover around 10,000 tribal villages in 26 districts, informed Mishra, adding “We will consider their problems and needs by organising meetings through our committees in the villages.”
“After assessing the tribals’ needs, we will also highlight their demands at a tribals’ congregation, Janajati Adhikar Samabesh, to be held here on December 26 along with commencement of the centenary celebrations of Vanyogi Balasaheb.
Ashram general secretary Dr Laxmikant Dash said the Ashram has so far worked for around 52 major STs in 6,800 villages in 112 blocks of 24 districts. “Due to Government apathy and social ignorance, the STs are deprived of facilities including water, education, shelter, transport and workplaces,” lamented Dash.
Mishra released a booklet Rastrasevare Samarpita Vanvasi Kalyan Ashram at the Press meet. Among others, Ashram media coordinator Golakh Dash was also present.
