PAK CEASEFIRE VIOLATIONS CROSS RECORD 100-MARK
Tuesday, 03 September 2013 | Mohit Kandhari | Jammu
The total number of ceasefire violations since the agreement in November 2003 has crossed mark of 100 with fresh incidents of ‘unprovoked’ firing reported along the Line of Control in Poonch on Monday.
According to reports, “Pak Army targeted forward Indian posts in the Balakote sector of Poonch around 11.30 am using small arms and automatic weapons”. Few mortar shells were also fired by the Pakistani troops towards the Indian posts but according to field reports no major damage was caused in the firing.
The Indian soldiers retaliated against the attack by using the same calibre weapons in equal measure, reports claimed.
Since August 6, 2013, Pak troops have violated ceasefire agreement on more than 45 occasions in the Poonch and Rajouri sector. On August 30, three incidents of ceasefire violations were reported in the Pallanwala area of Akhnoor sector, Sabjian and Hamirpur sectors of Poonch.
The local residents in the area were worried after learning about the fresh exchange of firing after a small gap. The residents, spending sleepless nights for past three weeks, were feeling slightly relieved as the frequency and intensity of firing had considerably reduced from both the sides in the forward areas.
Meanwhile, intelligence agencies have warned against possible infiltration attempts of terrorists from across the LoC in the coming days. The Indian jawans, on their part are strictly following the SOP’s and maintaining round-the-clock high vigil to foil any infiltration bid from across the Line of Control. The Indian Army has also rubbished media reports of successful infiltration in Poonch sector following unconfirmed reports of spotting of suspected infiltrators in the forward areas of Poonch.
