Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi took a dig at Centre for failing to protect interest of Indian fishermen. The BJP’s campaign committee chief said that the Congress-led UPA Government was unable to take up the issue of Indian fishermen with Pakistan.
While addressing a function at newly-formed Somnath district on Monday, Modi criticised the Central Government for its failure to bring back more than 750 Indian fishing boats valued at nearly Rs300 crore.
“Earlier, the fishermen were released with their boats. But because of ‘weak’ Government at the helm, Pakistan authorities are only releasing fishermen and
keeping their fishing boats with them. There was a time, fishermen used to come back via sea route with their boats. Now, fishermen are
returning from Wagah Border without their livelihood,” Modi said.
Because of Indian Government’s stance, neighbouring country dared to cross all the limits, he said, adding that Pakistani coastguard even took the possession of an Indian ship, which stranded in mid-sea due to engine failure. “The Pakistani guards not only took it to Karachi Port but also arrested those who were aboard. Later on Pakistani authority released them, but didn’t return the ship, which was costing more than all the Indian boats in their possession,” said the Gujarat Chief Minister.
Launching blistering attack on Congress-led UPA Government in another function at Botad district, Modi said that present rulers at Centre under the ill-omen of bad governance, emptied India’s coffers. “They pushed the nation to the brink of grave crisis. Due to Food Security Bill, more than 1.45 lakh families would deprive of 10 kg grain,” he said.
Modi said that the Central Government was refusing permission to raise the height of Sardar Sarovar Project (SSP) on the River Narmada.
“Despite repeated memorandum for the same, the Centre is ignoring the important issue for the parch Gujarat. Now, the surplus rainwater is going waste and flowing into the Arabian Sea,” he added.
