A Toronto man was arrested Wednesday for walking into Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s office and pretending to have a bomb.
On Thursday Mohammed Jimale, 45, was charged with “one count uttering threats and one count mischief,” after allegedly “walking into [a] governmental building with a suspicious package, threatening people and praying in a foreign language,” according to The Ottawa Sun. Jimale has since been ordered to see a psychiatrist.
The bomb scare occurred just a few hours before a government speech before the throne. Harper was not present during the threat that many thought was a terrorist attack in the making.
All roads surrounding the prime minister’s office were roped off while a bomb squad arrived to investigate the scene. The object in question, a briefcase, was deemed safe and not to be explosive.
Jimale’s wife, Fos Elmi, 44, told QMI Agency her husband is a very gentle man, devoted to his faith. Elmi also said she did not know why her husband made the trip to Ottawa.
This is not Jimale’s first run-in with the law. In 1998 the man was convicted and fined $250 dollars for “communication for the purposes of prostitution,” reportedThe Ottawa Sun.
