Bhubaneswar,23\8:Even as the Ravenshaw University authorities insisted on going ahead with indirect elections, the continued protests made by student communities forced the authorities to postpone the scheduled class representative polls, scheduled for Tuesday, for an indefinite period.
Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) student leaders Chinmay Sahoo and Rakesh Dhooper had held a six-day fast agitation in front Vice-Chancellor office opposing the decision of indirect elections.
Despite that the authorities declared the dates for indirect elections. In protest, ABVP activists had been holding a demonstration since August 18 in front of the Raj Bhawan in Bhubaneswar and submitted a memorandum to the Governor.
On Tuesday, the day scheduled for class representative polls, no student filed nomination forcing the VC to put on hold the election.
“Students have shown their unity to protect their democratic rights through holding of direct elections to the Students’ Union,” said ABVP State secretary and former university general secretary Avilash Panda.
He said the student’s democratic rights should not be suppressed for self interest of a few.
Similarly, the Ravenshaw Bikash Abhijan (RBA) also congratulated the Ravenshawvians for being united for upholding their democratic rights. The RBA has demanded resignation of the Vice-Chancellor.
Echoing the same views, the All India Democratic Students’ Organisation (AIDSO) congratulated the students, professors, intellectuals and lecturers and demanded for an early direct election in the university.
The student leaders have threatened to intensify their protest if the demands are not fulfilled.
