Samskrit in Australia

The Department of Education under various states in Australia encourages the study of Community languages in State Schools in Australia and offer limited financial assistance while providing venue at State Schools free of cost to conduct language schools during weekends. Among other languages Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada were being taught. After intense lobbying and convincing Sanskrit was accepted as a community language and the School of Vedic Sciences was setup under which Sydney Sanskrit School has been teaching Sanskrit since 2006. This is the first Community Language Sanskrit School in the Southern Hemisphere (not sure if there are any in US or so). After humble beginnings the school has grown in strength and popularity offering excellence in Sanskrit Education spoken and written.

Some of the achievements of the students have been:

Performed a number of plays in spoken Sanskrit on stage on

Adi Shankars Viveka Choodamani,

A day in the village of Mattur (Sanskrit Village),
Reference to Australia in Skanda Purana,
Lifestyle of all three acharayas

Composed number of Sanskrit Rhymes
Acting Subhashitam on stage

The school celebrates Samaskrutotsavam annually which are preceded by Bhagavad Gita, Shubhashitam and Chanakya Nithi recitation competition.

The demand to teach Sanskrit has incresed to the extent that the limitation is now due to lack of trained teachers than students. IT is expected in the next two years atleast two of the students would have completed school education and would be able to handle classes with limited supervision/independently.
