HC asks Govt to file details on Jagannath temple security

BHUBANESWAR

Not satisfied by an half-hearted affidavit made by the State Government on the security measures taken at Jagannath Temple in Puri, the Odisha High Court on Thursday again issued a notice asking the Government to submit a ‘detail report’ on it.

A division bench comprising Chief Justice V Gopalgowda and Justice BN Mohaptra issued the notice when the matter came before it on the day.

It may be mentioned here that the Government last month had informed the court that adequate steps had been taken to maintain law and order and proper security measures are in place at the 12th century shrine in view of the threat perceptions on it.

The affidavit had also mentioned that a judicial enquiry report on the stampede at the temple during the Nagarjuna Vesa in 1998 was “lost” and subsequently another judicial enquiry was ordered in 2006 to find out as to who were responsible for the loss of the earlier report.

“The 2006 judicial enquiry report has already been accepted by the Government and steps are being taken for follow-up action on the basis of recommendations made by it”, the affidavit had stated.

The Government response had come in the wake of a PIL filed in the court by a Cuttack-based socio-cultural organization—‘Maitree Sansad’ way back in 2003 in which it had questioned about the poor law and order and security measures in the famous temple.

It may be also be noted here that following death of at least six persons in 1998 stampede, Justice JM Mohapatra was appointed to conduct an enquiry. The judicial Commission had submitted its report to the Government. But that report was lost. Subsequently another judicial Commission headed by Justice PK Mohanty was instituted to find out the person (s) responsible for the loss of earlier report which was in the possession of the Government.

But last month’s Government affidavit was completely silent on the findings of the Justice Mohanty’s report without mentioning about the suggestions made in it.

Muslim groups back RSS leader Indresh

Muslim groups back RSS leader Indresh
Jaipur

Several Muslim leaders and organisations have come out in support of senior RSS leader Indresh Kumar, whose name has figured in the chargesheet filed by the Anti Terrorist Squad (ATS) in the Ajmer dargah bomb blast case.

Claiming that Indresh had been championing the cause of Hindu-Muslim unity, president of Mirza Ghalib Society Shamshad Ali Shaad said, “A person like Indresh Kumar can never be involved in a terrorist attack on a Muslim shrine”.

Two other well-known Urdu poets, Abdul Gaffar and Mirza Habib, expressed similar views. They said Indresh Kumar was the “guiding spirit” in the formation of organisations like Rashtravadi Muslim Manch and My Hindustan, which are engaged in removing misconceptions about RSS within the Muslim community.

They said that the ATS sleuths were trying to implicate Indresh Kumar without having convincing proof against him. “The case against Indresh Kumar will fall flat during trial,” they commented.

Salawat Khan, chairman of the State Waqf Board said the efforts by the ATS to implicate Indresh Kumar would collapse in course of time.

Meanwhile, Rajasthan Home Minister Shanti Dhariwal said the ATS would soon come out with more solid evidence to establish the involvement of the senior RSS functionary and a few of his colleagues in the case. Talking to mediapersons, he said that so far the ATS was able to establish that Indresh Kumar had guided the Ajmer shrine bomb blasts, in which three persons were killed.

Anti-terror front calls for FIR against Arundhati
Chandigarh

The Chandigarh unit of the All-India Anti-Terrorist Front on Thursday met Punjab Director General of Police PS Gill and sought registering of a first information report against controversial writer and activist Arundhati Roy for making anti-national statements during her recent visit to Jalandhar.

After Jharkhand and Uttarakhand in the past, it is the turn of Chandigarh to raise its voice against the Booker Prize winner.

The AIATF has raised objections over Arundhati's speech during a public meeting in Jalandhar on October 17. Under the leadership of AIATF chief Maninderjit Singh Bitta, four front members met Gill at the Punjab Police headquarters.

A public meeting had been organised by the front against Operation Green Hunt in Jalandhar. “Arundhati made inflammatory speeches aimed at disturbing the tranquility of Punjab and to lead its people to subvert the Government of India. In her speech, she supported the Naxalites and said that the battle waged by them is a necessity. She said that no one has the right to ask tribals and Maoists to be non-violent as everyone had the right to choose their mode of protest against oppression,” Bitta said.

According to AIATF, Roy named Manipur, Nagaland, Punjab, Kashmir and some other places where the Army and police have been deployed against insurgents.

Press Statement of Sh. Suresh (Bhayyaji) Joshi – Sarkaryavah

Press Statement of Sh. Suresh (Bhayyaji) Joshi – Sarkaryavah

The intentional tirade against the RSS by some political leaders and investigators after dragging the name of Sri Indresh Kumar, Member of the Kendriya Karyakarini of the RSS in the charge sheet filed by the ATS, Rajasthan indicate that the politically motivated designs against RSS and it's workers are going on along with attempts to influence investigating agencies.

In the wake of the arrest of a Vibhag Pracharak of the RSS Sri Devendra Gupta by the ATS, Rajasthan on 30 April 2010 in a case pertaining to some bomb blast incidents in the country I had stated that the RSS does neither believe in nor support any form of violence. I announced our cooperation to the investigating agencies and called upon them to conduct a thorough and honest investigation against individuals who were alleged to be involved in acts of terror.

In the last several months, following that direction, our functionaries have extended full cooperation to the investigating agencies in the hope that they will deliver their duties fairly. In the process our activists had to endure humiliations and in several instances physical and mental torture in the hands of the overzealous investigators. All this was taken in our stride thinking that perhaps the agencies were sincerely doing their job and hence a few indiscretions may be overlooked by us.

But the charge sheet filed by the ATS, Rajasthan a few days ago in the Ajmer blasts case and the subsequent statements galore by the investigators as well as the politicians completely belie our expectations about an impartial investigation. The way the name of the RSS has been draged in with scant respect for the facts and the way senior RSS functionary Sri Indresh Kumar's name has been invoked without any substantiating evidence makes clear that the investigation is influenced by is no longer an honest one.

It is evident from the charge sheet that there were no formal charges against Sri Indresh Kumar, neither was he named as an accused so far. In fact the investigators have not even once talked to him in the last several months during the course of their investigation. Yet to drag his name through a meeting of which he had no knowledge is a clear case of conspiracy to damage his reputation as well as that of the organization. Several politicians also started talking irresponsibly without verifying the facts. Even a section of the media too showed undue haste in wrongly projecting Sri Indresh as an accused and started attacking the Sangh.

We are now convinced that contrary to our expectations and hopes the investigations into the bomb blast cases at Ajmer and Hyderabad are turning political and vindictive and there are clear signs of a sinister design to defame the RSS. Let me make it clear that while we are a Constitution-abiding organization with full faith in the process of law we can't be cowed down by unscrupulous and sinister political conspiracies.

I am constrained to announce that the malafide intentions of the investigators and their political masters will be challenged by the organization on all the available fora including the courts. I am also obliged to inform millions of Swayamsevaks and supporters of the organization that the Sangh is committed to it's mission of building a united, strong and vibrant Bharat and a disciplined and patriotic society. Our march towards the mission will continue inspite of several hurdles on the strength of the love, trust and support of our countrymen.

Be assured: Sangh is capable of creation, destruction & recreation too.

" If the political party started by Sangh gets corrupt, the Sangh has the strength to destroy it.”-
-Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay,

The recent political developments in Karnataka are disappointing to those having social concern. Those anticipating a good future for the country have been disappointed by the leaders of all political parties who have been acting as if corruption, immorality and horse trading are the inevitable features of politics.

As a Swayamsevak of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, I feel that there is an urgent need in responding to this situation. There are two reasons: firstly, among the rulers of this state, there are some who have contacts with the Sangh. The common men measure their activities from the point of view of the Sangh too. Secondly, there is no mechanism in RSS to publicize its internal discussions.

I’m writing this article thinking that it would be better to share such views (for the second reason) since I am closely working with the senior activists of the sangh for many years and I have some information about the recent political developments.

The Sangh does not agree with all the activities or resolutions of the BJP and the government in the state either ‘in principle’ or ‘in practice’. The Sangh opposes corruption, horse trading and unethical decisions. Just like the RSS activists welcome the prohibition of cow slaughter, they oppose the SEZ. Just like the Sangh elders appreciate those MLAs who do not earn a single paise for themselves despite being elected as MLAs for many terms, they express their anguish towards those who are corrupt. They even convey their resent to such persons in strong words.

What is the use in just expressing anger? Some action should be taken- this is the stand of many people. Inner transformation is the way Sangh adopts to encourage the Swayamsevaks. May it be the efforts to root out the caste system or corruption, inner change is the ultimate solution. Many Sangh leaders work from this view point for the past many years. This effort continues irrespective of whether there is BJP government in the state or not.

Lakhs of Swayamsevaks have passed in first class after they learn about good conduct, ethics and social concern in the university of Sangh, but at the same time, there are people who have ‘failed’ in the social life. In such cases, self-effort by these people is more important than the support of the co-Swayamsevaks. We should not forget that those whom the common men perceive as ‘clean’ in the present state cabinet are all the Swayamsevaks of Sangh.

Many people talk about the frequent visits of the State BJP leaders to ‘Keshavakrupa’, the RSS office in Bangalore. Hence, they ask us why can’t we question such persons and give them strong advice. Yes, the Sangh expresses its opinion with those people in accordance with its ‘stands’ mentioned above. Many a time this message is conveyed in strong words too. It is not proper to deny entry to anybody to Keshavakripa. The doors of Sangh are wide open to people from all walks and sectors of the society any time. It is a regular phenomenon that not just the BJP leaders, but also the leaders of other political parties, people who do not agree with the principles of Sangh, intellectuals, litterateurs and social activists- hundreds of people visit the office every day. Being a social organization, the Sangh cannot close its doors to anybody. Still, the Sangh has informed people concerned recently that it is not appropriate to visit the Sangh office only to discuss the ‘political strife’ with a note that it would lead to the opinion that Sangh has its nod to all the activities of the BJP. (There is another issue here: Whether some people visit the Sangh office or not, it does not make any difference in the moral responsibility of the Swayamsevaks. Isn’t their meeting with the Sangh leaders inevitable at least to caution them on their acts?)

Now, the matter of Sangh ‘taking any action’: all those who know about the functioning of Sangh, also know the relationship between Sangh and different organizations. May it be matters related to the policies of the organizations, or to the individual behavior, the activists of the organizations themselves rectify the mistakes and take decisions that are good for the society. The advices of Sangh should be implemented by those people holding responsibilities in such organizations. For example, when the Sangh leaders advised the BJP to bring youngsters to the key positions of the party, it selected Nithin Gadkari as its national president. Similarly, the Sangh has been pressing its Swayamsevaks in the BJP to give an administration that is free of corruption, in accordance with the culture and values and to build a party with persons having good conduct. It is their responsibility to implement them. (Selection of the president is an internal and organizational process of an organization. But issues like corruption and government policy is a vast subject that depends on the mindset of the present society. A corruption-free administrative system will only be representative of the society, but cannot originate from zero. This fact strengthens the Sangh’s belief of ‘social transformation through character building or that which Swami Vivekananda called “Man Making Mission”.

To speak about the present political scenario in the state – when the BJP leaders visited the Sangh office to inform the ongoing political developments, one of the Sangh heads suggested them to dissolve the government and to go to the people. They also advised them to drop the tainted persons from key positions. It is the implementers who should have the will to do so. The Sangh itself cannot do it. In the democratic system adopted by the country, a political party has its own way of functioning. More importantly, there is ‘politics’. It is not proper to be deceived because of one’s own goodness. At the same time, the Sangh does not agree with those following the unethical path in the name of political strategy.

The recent statements of the BJP’s opposition party leaders (Sangh does not have any opposition party) that the Sangh should advise the BJP leaders, have been reported in the newspapers. It is evident here that even the rivals of the BJP have perceived that the Sangh has the moral power to advise a political party like BJP. It has been reported that an important political leader of the state said in a press conference that the RSS should advise the BJP regarding the ‘purchase’ of MLAs. The political leader who made the statement is also involved in the ‘business’. This is just like the ‘enlightenment’ happened in Karna when his chariot got stranded at the war front.

Sangh has its own method of thinking for the purpose of upholding morality in the society. Corruption can be rooted out only when transformation takes place among politicians, officials, businessmen and common men. If any one of the parties here is corrupt, the system cannot be transformed. The Sangh is into efforts to create good leadership in all the four groups. It is true that good virtues should percolate from top to bottom. But the number of people with good virtues should increase in the society. They cannot be there only at the top. Hence, the Sangh has been striving towards developing virtues among the individuals continuously.

Once, a Swayamsevak asked Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay, who entered a political party as a Sangh Swayamsevak and seeded a new ideology and culture there: “There is a saying that power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Will it not happen if the leaders of Janasangh get power?” Deendayal said: “It is possible”. The Swayamsevak again asked: “Then, what is the hope for the future?” Deendayal replied: “The strength of Sangh”. He continued: “If the political party started by Sangh gets corrupt, the Sangh has the strength to destroy it.”

“Well, if it happens again?” the Swayamsevak asked once again. Deendayal smiled and said: “Haven’t you heard the story of Parashurama who circumambulated the earth 21 times in order to destroy the Kshatriyas? Until Rama incarnated, Parashurama did not rest. Therefore, the strength of Sangh – the strength of good people of this country is not at all helpless. Have faith in that. The Sangh has the strength of destruction like Parashurama and creation also. It has the maturity to decide, when the time requires.”

The ultimate target of Sangh is not ‘one government or one chief minister or one prime minister’. But it is the building of an organized society based on Bharatiya cultural values. The Sangh has treaded on a confident path all these eight and a half decades. It is satisfied with the transformation achieved so far. Lakhs of Swayamsevaks are involved in the mission of social transformation across the country. This is reflected in a total of 1.53 lakh service activities, 32,000 educational institutions and activities of reformation in thousands of tribal dwellings all across the country. ‘Forming a government’ or ‘a political party’ is just a small part of this vast canvas. Hence, the well wishers of Sangh and the opposition party persons of the BJP need not worry.

Even the Vathsale will not Pardon RSS

(Summary of article by Pratap Simha in Vijaya Karnataka 23.10.2010)

On 30th May 2008, when B.S.Yedyurappa took over as 19th Chief Minister of Karnataka, people of Karnataka and in particular, BJP voters were very happy. Party workers celebrated the occasion as if they got the power. People started identifying themselves with the government. In the aftermath of Haveri firing, farmers protest in Davanagere and Operation Lotus which is intended to stabilize the government, people defended the BJP and its government.

But after two and half years, situation has changed. Especially after the resignation of Justice Santhosh Hegde, people started feeling ashamed of the government. Now, it has worsened. BJP karyakarthas are apologetically admitting the heightened corruption in government machinery.

While these things are happening, Sangh Karyakarthas, always in the midst of people - who go the houses associated with Sangh and have food with them on a daily basis, not aware of these things?

It is not so.

Sangh Karyakarthas are very much unhappy about these developments. They are helpless. They have no role to set right these things. But, RSS leaders at National (and state) are capable of taking action. But why are they not doing anything? If they continue to maintain that BJP is not in their control, and refuse to do something, people will lose trust even in them. RSS, which is capable of ensuring ascent of state level leader Nitin Gadkari, who was unknown at the National level, should be able to do something about a BJP government of a state. It should not cite its media policy as an excuse. It would lose respect by refusing to shoulder political responsibility in the pretext of a socio cultural organization. If BJP is a party with difference (now, certainly it is not) then it is because of its RSS roots. But why Sangh Parivar organizations are not taking any steps to correct this situation? Have they compromised their principles to protect the BJP government in Karnataka?

In 1998, the then prime minister A. B. Vajapayee who had Sangh background, refused to indulge in corrupt practices and his government was defeated by one vote. By then, P.V. Narasimha Rao had already set the precedence of buying MPs to win the Vote of confidence. But Vajapayee practiced politics adhering to moral principles.

In the present of deteriorated state politics, Operation Lotus cannot be condemned too harshly. But who is responsible for a situation which made resuming of the Operation Lotus a necessity?

Still, why is there a silence in RSS?

Sangh always takes a firm stance against terrorism, conversions and Jihad. They advocate tough line of action against Pakistan and China. But why are they not taking similar firm stance against corruption? Have they forgotten the lessons learnt from the ill effects of corrupt practices adopted by British? Why do they not understand that illegal ore exporters cannot be different from Mir Jaffers of history? Has RSS, which shares emotional bonding with the land of this country, stooped to consciously support the land grabbers of Karnataka government?

Is there no precedent where RSS criticizes BJP government? No. Modi government in Gujarat was severely criticized by many Sangh Parivar organizations when it demolished road side temples that were illegally built.

B.S.Yedyurappa may be inevitable for the BJP government in Karnataka and for the state BJP. But this is the time to act so that next two years, Karnataka people will get a good government. Sangh should do something. If they don’t act, even the kind goddess - mother of the land, whom they pray everyday, will not pardon them.

Lotus buds in Kerala, Hindus awaiting it's full bloom

Lotus buds in Kerala, Hindus awaiting it's full bloom

Thiruvananthapuram: Amidst highly polarized Political scenario in Kerala in which traditionally voters are split among Congress lead UDF and CPI(M) lead LDF – BJP had shown an impressive performance this time in the local body elections in which the results were out today. When the results of all districts except Kozhikode district came out, BJP had gained many seats in traditional UDF and LDF strongholds and came second in many places sending hopes to Hindus in this state. Traditionally Hindu votes used to split between UDF and LDF and both these arch rivals often make pacts to make sure BJP is never bought to scene.

In Thiruvananthapuram Corporation BJP gained 6 and 2 seats each in Kochi and Thrissur corporations.BJP also bagged 19 Grampanchayath seats so far. In Alappuzha BJP bagged seats in Ambalapuzha and Kayakulam.Thrissur Muncipality BJP Bagged 2 seats from Kunamkulam area .In Kasargode BJP won 11 seats in Muncipality and 13 seats in Palakkad Munciplaity and 3 in Shornnur. In Thrissur BJP also won 2 seats from Kodungallur and one in Guruvayur. In Wayanadu Noolpuzha panchayath, BJP’s victory had given them the decisive power on who should rule the panchayath. In Kochi were BJP won 2 seats CPM candidate were pushed to fourth place.BJP bagged one seat each from Attingal and Varkala Muncipal seats and 2 from Nedumangad. In Pathanamthitta Lotus bloomed in two Muncipal seats and 4 seats in Thiruvalla. In Kanchangad Muncipality BJP won 5 seats and 3 seats in Elur in Ernakulam district. In Muslim majority Mallapuram district also BJP had marked their place in Kottakkal and Ponnani.

Altogether the trend this time was against LDF and CPM had lost their many strongholds to UDF. Victory of UDF lead by Congress is primarily the victory of consolidated Muslim and Christian votes through Muslim league and Kerala Congress. Anti Hindu stands and blind Minority pampering measures taken by Communists had alienated Hindus as well but once again majority of Hindus who voted for LDF last time shifted their loyalty to UDF. The current victory of BJP is definitely a way ahead for the upcoming assembly elections. Unless Hindus consolidate their votes for the common benefit of Hindu society we will be marginalised in all fronts more vigorously in coming days.

BJP 'Surprise' from Kerala

The results of the civic polls in Kerala indicated that the State BJP is in for better times after facing charges of vote-trade and rampant faction fights for quite some time. The party not only succeeded in retaining the seats it won in municipalities like Palakkad in the last election but also registered surprise wins in Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi corporations and other civic bodies.

In Palakkad, where the BJP lost the chance to rule after the 2005 civic polls due to the untouchability policy adopted by the CPI(M) and the Congress, retained the 15 seats it had bagged last time. The party claimed second position here and in Kasaragod Municipality where it won in 12 divisions.

In at least four municipalities, neither the CPI(M)-led LDF nor the Congress-led UDF can come to power without the support of the BJP. These include Eloor in Ernakulam district and Kunnamkulam in Thrissur district where the BJP has won in three and five divisions respectively.

The Palakkad Municipality is set to see the same uncertainty it had faced after the 2005 civic elections. The UDF, which has won 23 of the total 42 seats here, will have to join hands with its arch rival, the Left, if it wants to rule the municipality without the BJP’s support. In the hung council of Ottapalam Municipality also, the BJP’s position will be crucial.

However, the most surprising performance of the BJP was in Thiruvananthapuram Corporation where it bagged six seats. The party had not won in even a single division in the capital civic body in the 2005 election. In Kochi and Thrissur corporations, the BJP won two seats each.

The other surprising performance of the BJP was seen in Thiruvalla Municipality where it bagged five seats. It had won in only two seats in the 2005 election.. The party won two seats in Nedumangad and one in Attingal municipalities. As results of the elections to Grama, Block and District panchayats trickled in, it was certain that the party would register

India colonising Kashmir’

India colonising Kashmir’

Khursheed Wani | Srinagar

Irascible Arundhati spreads more hatred, this time in Valley

Activist Arundhati Roy, who recently whipped up a major controversy by advocating ‘azadi’ for Kashmir at a seminar in New Delhi, has gone a step further by claiming that the State was never an integral part of India and those espousing the cause of “freedom from India” should not be called separatists. Alleging that India became a “colonising power” soon after its Independence from British rule, she asked the people of Kashmir not to join the police or CRPF and work to consolidate the “anti-India resistance”.

Speaking at a seminar on ‘Wither Kashmir: Freedom or Enslavement’, organised by the Coalition of Civil Societies (CCS) here on Sunday, Roy said, “Kashmir has never been an integral part of India. It is a historical fact. Even the Indian Government has accepted this.”

While taking pride in associating herself with “resistance movements” across India, Roy counselled the people of Kashmir Valley to consolidate over the “gains” of the recent four months of anti-India agitation.

She said that since the day India won freedom from the British, it turned into a “colonizer” itself and started subsuming nationalities militarily in Nagaland, Manipur, Punjab, Kashmir and other places. “Now India is calling out the Army in central India to fight a protracted war against the poorest people of the world,” she claimed.

Roy offered tips to the people to organise and consolidate the “anti-India resistance”. “The power concedes nothing unless it is forced to,” she said while advocating the need for seeking justice through demands of demilitarisation and repeal of “harsh laws like the Armed Forces Special Powers Act”. She said the people should ponder as to whether the “resistance” is in linear progression or short-circuiting.

While asking the Kashmiris to refrain from joining State police and the Central Reserve Police Force, she said the people (of Kashmir) should worry whether the occupation was not becoming “part of your cellular structure”. She also stressed the need for them to fix the goal of their resistance.

Though she tried to appear unmoved over the accusations of preaching cessation at the recent Delhi seminar, she said she wondered why nobody was inquiring into as to who had organised the seminar. “What was their motive and who were the people behind it. It was not that Geelani sahib parachuted down at the venue. There was proper arrangement made for the speakers to gather there,” she said.

She asked Kashmiris to create more space for debate and consolidate over the gains of the past four months. “You have gained considerable ground in the past four months. Now you should think to consolidate on it. The real risk is that it should not turn into temper tantrum,” she said. “The debates are part of the sharp blade of resistance. If you don’t debate, they still know what your faultlines are,” she pointed out.

She differed with the idea of fellow speaker Gautam Naulakha that participation in elections did not impact the resistance movements. “You (Kashmiris) should think how the elections were used against you (internationally),” she offered.

Roy said that in the late 1980s, India simultaneously opened the locks of Babri Masjid and open economy to become totalitarian for Hidutva and corporatisation. She said that whichever Government assumed power at the Centre, be it the Congress or the BJP, it has to be militaristic. “The Prime Minister of the world’s largest democracy has not been elected,” she added.

Roy said that India was “behaving like a colonial power and suppressing one community at the hands of the other just like the British” did in World War II. “They are sending Nagas to Kashmir and Punjabis to Manipur,” she said.

The ‘activist’ explained her interactions with Maoist rebels and expressed happiness over the involvement of women in their “struggle”. She added, “Biodiversity has to be the hallmark of resistance so that it can’t be wiped out with one kind of pest.”

Senior Delhi-based Kashmiri journalist Najeeb Mubarki said there was consensus over radical change in the status quo of Kashmir. He also deliberated over the role of corporate media, misrepresentation of the situation in Kashmir and issues of Islamism. Coalition of Civil Society, an NGO that works against enforced disappearances, had organised the seminar here on Sunday.

Advani challenges PM, Rahul to debate Central funds row openly

Advani challenges PM, Rahul to debate Central funds row openly

PTI | Hajipur/Bettiah (Bihar)

Senior BJP leader L K Advani today invited Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi to openly debate their statements on use of Central funds in Bihar, saying the amount did not belong to either of them.

"The central funds do not belong to Manmohan Singh or for that matter the party ruling at the Centre ... It is the money of the country distributed among the states in keeping with constitutional norms," the BJP Parliamentary Party Chairman said during election meetings at Hajipur and Bettiah.

Attacking Singh and Gandhi for their comments alleging non-implementation of Central schemes in the state, Advani said "I ask Manmohan Singh and others to come to the platform here. We (NDA) are ready for a open debate."

"All NDA leaders, including Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and even BJP General Secretary Ravishankar Prasad will be at their disposal for the debate," he said.

He also challenged RJD chief Lalu Prasad to an open debate with any NDA leader he desired so that the people could decide whom to vote for on the basis of their merit.

RJD did nothing for Bihar's development during its 15-year rule and "Criminals ruled the roost under state patronage while kidnapping flourished as an industry."

"People have adjudged Kumar as the most able CM Bihar ever had ... BJP and NDA know how to ensure better utilisation of funds," Advani said.

Referring to his 59-day Yatra in 1997 on the golden jubilee of the country's independence, Advani held Congress responsible for the ills plaguing the country, including in Jammu and Kashmir.

Reiterating demand for simultaneous polls to state Assemblies and Lok Sabha, Advani said he had strongly pitched for it during his recent meeting with Prime Minister as "frequent elections waste a lot of money."

Kashmir is integral part of India : Justice Vinod Gupta(Retired)
New Delhi. Oct 24, 2010. On the occasion of Kashmir Vilay Diwad (Kashmir accession Day) the Pakistan Occupied Kashmir citizen committee organized a public meeting in south Delhi. Speaking from the dice Ex chief justice of Uttaranchal born in POK said that it is very unfortunate to say that our politician are misinterpreting the law of the land. Nobody should have any confusion about the accession of the state into the union of India as Sec 3 of the constitution of Jammu & Kashmir clearly says that “J&K is integral part of India and its accession is final & irrevocable”. Even though the political accession was there but the emotional accession is missing in the minds of Kashmiris because of the politicians play in the valley.
Addressing the gathering in Saraswati Bal Mandir school ex Governor of Sikkim & Goa and the person who has been associated with the J&K since Indian Independence Shri Kedar Nath Sahani criticized the Kashmir talk initiators for their statement saying involvement of PAK to solve the Kashmir problem. Shri sahani said that if PAK is to be involved in talks then he should be talked about non other then that it is for getting POK.
Reacting sharply over the demand for autonomy or independence in the valley ex head of the department of Law-Jammu University Prof. K.L. Bhatiya said that why these voices raised from Kashmir only, not from Jammu or Laddakh region when these are also the part of the same state? When Maharaj Hari Singh has clearly signed the instrument of accession unconditionally then why separate constitution was created for the state? Thus to solve the whole problem the cause of the problem i.e. the separate constitution must be scraped, he added.
Dr. Sudesh Ratan, President of Mirpur Biradari association, shri Joginder Mahajan, President Kotali Biradari association and shri Padam Chand Jain, RSS Sangh Chalak –Lajpat District have also addressed the gathering. Many representatives of socio-religious organizations, public representatives and other prominent personalities of the area and large number of Residents of POK taken part in the programe. All participants of the program pledged their support for the integration of the country.

Prime Minister of India ,prosecute Arundhati Roy

To: The Government of India

To: Prime Minister of India

Dr. Manmohan Singh
Prime Minister of India
Prime Minister's Office
South Block

New Delhi 110 001

Dear Sir,

We the Indian people strongly urge the Indian government to strongly take action to prosecute Arundhati Roy and other anti nationals like her who use their celebrity status and parade on the basis of anti India elements. In August 2008 this self serving individual had no compunction in sharing the stage with religious fascists promoting hate and division in Kashmir. She has a track record in supporting ideological extremists in India engaged in terrorising millions of people to promote balkanisation of our nation and further demoralise Indian security forces fighting terrorism to protect innocent lives.

We request that Arundhati Roy is arrested under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act of 1967, amended in 2004-05. The Act says, "Secession of a part of the territory of India from the Union includes the assertion of any claim to determine whether such part will remain a part of the territory of India." The offences listed under this law include any assertion or statement "which is intended, or supports any claim, to bring about, on any ground whatsoever, the cession of a part of the territory of India or the secession of a part of the territory of India from the Union, or which incites any individual or group of individuals to bring about such cession or secession".

We the people of India have borne the brunt of terror attacks around the world. Bomb after bomb is targeted at innocent civilians with sickening regularity and amidst the pictures of bleeding bodies and smashed holy places it is not surprising then to not even hear a whimper from the usual very vocal Arundhati Roy and her fellow travellers involved in the lucrative business of selective human rights in South Asia.

We additionally urge the withdrawal of her passport to put a stop to these people travelling around the world to preach anti-India propaganda. These people have no voice for the victims of terror, the destruction of indigenous culture or the terrible record of violence against women and children but are happy to march with and beat the drum of people whose sole intention is to hurl South Asia into a medieval age of unrestrained violence and religious division.

These people have stayed notably silent over the terrible events occurring in the peaceful city of Mumbai recently. We the Indian people feel that now is the time for these people to be brought to bay and be prosecuted under Indian law. The fake veneer of fighting for the people whilst justifying the killing of the same people can no longer be borne by the peaceful Indian people. Gandhiji launched the Swadeshi movement to liberate both the minds and bodies of slavery and Imperialist dogma and now it is high time that a new Swadeshi and Quit India movement is launched to free India from those seeking to exploit the misery and suffering afflicting this ancient land today.

Tarun Vijay
23 October 2010,
Delhi witnessed a scene which would have been unimaginable in any other country with a governance that speaks for the land and its people. A person known as Syed Ali Shah Geelani, allegedly a known hawala racketeer and a backstabber Kashmiri who is a qualified Pakistani agent demanding "Azadi" from India, was allowed to speak at a meeting on "Azadi the only way". And the patriotic Indian protesters were arrested while the traitors were given law’s khaki protection.
Geelani, even by a modest definition, is a traitor who has no qualms about accepting Indian money for his medical treatment and getting Indian security for his life, and still abusing Indian democracy and people. He is the one who had more than a hundred Kashmiri youth killed by instigating them to pelt stones while his own kith and kin are enjoying foreign jaunts and a secure future abroad.
And lo and behold, this is what our home minister, P Chidambaram, said, "Geelani will be punished if sedition charges proved". He added that the proceedings of Thursday's seminar had been videographed and the footage was being checked to see if there was any violation of law in Geelani's speech at the seminar organized by sympathizers of Kashmiri separatists.
It’s like taking a picture of a caged jackal and sending it to wildlife experts to "have it examined" and figure out whether it’s a jackal or a rodent.
The seminar’s subject was clear. The organizers and the speakers were known anti-India schemers who abuse Indian democracy and guarantees of freedom of speech. The speeches made at the meeting were dismissive of the Indian state and insulted the spirit of the tricolour. In spite of the evident sedition, the Sonia-Rahul government has decided to go soft and further cause injury to the morale of those soldiers who have been sent to Kashmir by the state power to protect the Constitution and India’s integrity. Why should a soldier fight and die for such an enemy-friendly government? If the voices of sedition are to be allowed to spread venom against the armed forces and patriotic people of India and then the home minister, confused and much-maligned by the Sonia loyalists, issues such ridiculous statements that reflect his "mazboori" to placate the traitors, then at least the armed forces should be spared the humiliation of being the target of both the traitors and the rulers in the valley.
Except during the emergency, I have never seen such a terrified media and a fearful section of the opposition that feels scared to call the bluff of the ruling elite putting Indian security and morale of the forces at its lowest ebb. It was left for the fighting spirit of an opposition leader, Arun Jaitley, to come out with a statement that reflected the anguish of the Indian patriotic people. Where have all other leaders gone? Is the tricolor and its honour the responsibility of just one party? Can the rest can speak in favour of secessionists or maintain silence, looking for the right kind of vote-gathering opportunity? The professor who should have been sent to the gallows for conspiring against the Indian state is seen leading the attack on the nation’s integrity again, rather than feeling grateful to the democratic ironies of our society where the social secular sirens helped him to get a new lease of life.
Freedom of speech cannot be an absolute right etched in stone. Those who made use of this freedom in Delhi to assault the sentiments of millions of Indians do not give this right to anyone in their respective areas of influence. Geelani not only instigates his hired hoodlums to silence the other voices in the valley but is the main instigator to push Kashmir into the black alley of backwardness and Talibanism. He is, by any modest definition, a traitor, who has no qualms about accepting Indian money for his medical treatment and getting Indian security for his life and still abusing Indian democracy and the people.
Freedom of speech has limitations. Hence hate, secessionism and pornography do not constitute essential parts of the right to speak and write. As Stanley Fish puts it, "free speech, in short, is not an independent value but a political prize". No society has yet existed where speech has not been limited to some extent.
I must quote a few lines from the invitation that was circulated for the "Azadi" meeting. It said, "The happenings in Kashmir over the past few months need no retelling. The situation has deteriorated to extreme levels with unarmed civilians, mostly young teenagers, being killed by the Indian armed forces with impunity. The toll from June 11 has reached 109, with the numbers of injured, maimed, and blinded much more. Curfews, bullets, tear smoke have become a routine to suppress the peaceful democratic protests.
"It is important at this juncture to bring the attention towards the fact that the basic issue at hand regarding the Kashmir dispute is the Self-Determination of the people of Jammu & Kashmir, for which they have been steadfast and hence been the target of the repressive military machine of the Indian State. The people of Jammu & Kashmir are clear about the fact that what they want is Azadi, which they have time and again defined in coherent terms of letting them decide their own future.
"The latest people’s resistance — which forms part of recently launched ‘Quit Jammu & Kashmir Movement’ — needs to be viewed as a continuity of the Resistance movement (Tehreek) which the people of Kashmir have been sustaining for over six decades.
"The political dispute vis-a-vis Kashmir need not be confused with the superficial measures like the removal of AFSPA, human rights violations, other draconian acts, stopping of unlawful killings, torture, enforced disappearances, etc. Though all these things do exist and need to be stopped at any cost, they manifest only symptoms of a broader and deeper malaise — militarized governance used to maintain a military occupation of the region by the Indian state, through its armed forces, numbering at least 7,00,000."
Lies, absolute lies. You can talk to an honest enemy. You may have a dialogue with a secessionist who is sticking to his guns with some integrity and conviction. But how can you have a debate with a dishonest pleader?
Who are the people of Jammu & Kashmir waging this "Tehreek"? Is it true that "unarmed civilians" are being killed by the Indian armed forces? Or the violent and hateful stone pelters fell victim to Geelani’s instigations to attack Kashmir police, which is 95% Kashmiri Muslim? Why is the name of Indian armed forces being falsely dragged by these stone pelters' Delhi shields?
Aren't they playing the game of Pakistan by attacking the Indian armed forces, while everyone knows they are not at all at ground zero in the valley and all the active assignments of enforcing the law are being executed by J&K police or by CRPF, that too at the instructions of the state government, which is headed by Omar Abdullah, the "confused Indian and an uncertain Kashmiri" CM.
Who are these people, working as journalist in a mainline paper or dollar gatherer jugglers of words of an anglicized tribe to hold a brief for the "self-determination of the people of Jammu & Kashmir"? Do they know what constitutes J&K? Do they even know where Ladakh is? Do they know the patriotic people of Ladakh? And Jammu? And of the valley too? A small pro-Pakistan coterie of the Wahhabism, not more than 10% of the entire population of the state, is trying to grab the centre stage through violence and forcefully exiling its minority Hindu community. Why is this factor never discussed by or seen on the radar of "Azadi" seekers and their traitor friends in Delhi and Aligarh Muslim University?
Who is this Wazahat Habibullah, the backroom boy of the ruling family, speaking for the secessionists? Is he trying to repay some kind of a debt to his mentors?
India has fallen victim to a fake state - rulers who are taking the angst and patriotism for granted - inviting an unavoidable storm.

When marriage turns Ram into Ravan

When marriage turns Ram into Ravan

Kathmandu, Oct 13 (IANS) Twenty years ago, Ganesh Jha of India's Ayodhya town was known as Ram.

The 40-year-old is one of the major actors at the Saket Adarsha Ramlila Mandal (SARM) in India's Uttar Pradesh state that, like hundreds of other mandals or drama groups in India, tours the subcontinent and even abroad during the festival season of Dussehra.

Its repertoire consists primarily of the Ramlila, the adoption of the Ramayan, the epic tale of the war between Prince Ram and demon king Ravan, that is also a symbol of the universal battle between good and evil.

Jha, who joined the troupe when he was 10, soon rose to play the role of Ram when he was a young boy and then, the stripling prince.

However, when his family got him married at the age of 20, Jha had to bid farewell to the role of Ram, who's also one of the most popular Hindu icons.

Since then, he has been playing the role of Ravan, who abducts Ram's wife Sita and as a consequence, loses his kingdom, life and dynasty after a protracted and savage war marked by espionage and treachery.

'We Ramlila artistes are not like film actors,' says Rabindra Das, SARM's director, who travelled to southern Nepal with 24 other members to perform in the border towns. 'We enact the Ramlila in accordance with Hindu religious principles.'

Since Ram is considered to have been an incarnation of Hindu god Vishnu, tradition dictates that the actor playing him in Ramlila has to be celibate. So once the actor gets married, the role passes on to another unmarried actor.

SARM says its actors are especially groomed. In the morning, young actors are schooled in the old Gurukul style, being taught the scriptures and traditional knowledge. In the afternoon, they are initiated into the art of enacting religious and divine plays.

Once a band of wandering minstrels, Ramlila artistes have come up today. Jha gets a monthly salary of Rs.25,000, the actor told Kantipur daily. A show costs about Rs.5 lakh, what with the addition of elaborate lights, a sound system and special effects.

Also, it is an elaborate act, usually spilling over into three weeks. However, this time the performance has been shortened to 12 days, starting at 8 p.m. and continuing till midnight.

Nepalgunj, the border town in Nepal where the troupe is performing this Dussehra, has a large Muslim population.

When the curtain goes up at the Tandon Rice Mill grounds, where a makeshift theatre has been constructed, Muslims watch the show together with Hindus just as they celebrate the festival together with Hindus.

Nepal, though once the only Hindu kingdom in the world where conversions were a punishable offence, has a history of living in harmony with different religious communities and the Ramlila dialogues reverberate through the town via loudspeakers.

Shyam Sundar Kanodia, chairman of the local Ramlila committee, says the town has been inviting troupes from India to perform the tale for 143 years without any break.

It is an impressively long tradition. SARM itself has been performing in Nepal since the last 30 years, unhindered by political tension between the two neighbouring countries or conflict in India, especially in Ayodhya, which in the past saw one of the worst scenes of sectarian violence, killing over 2000.

SECESSIONISTS ARE INDULGING IN TREASON

28.9.2010

By Shyam Khosla

No one interested in peace and normalcy in Kashmir valley would oppose dialogue with alienated sections of the society to understand their “genuine grievances” and to regain their trust. However, talking to citizens that are victims of circumstances created by others, including countries inimical to India, is one thing and blinking before secessionists whose agenda is to dismember the country is quite another. That is why antics of Sitaram Yachuri (CPM), Gurudas Gupta (CPI) and Ram Vilas Paswan (LJP) have outraged the nation. They went beyond their mandate to call upon separatist leaders who had rejected with contempt the Government invitation to meet the high level Parliamentary delegation that recently spent three days in J&K. Instead of marginalizing Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Umer Farooq and Yasin Malik, who are playing the Pakistani game by inciting violence and spreading venom against the nation, these delegates provided them with yet another opportunity to get international publicity for their treacherous demands by agreeing to talk to separatists in full media glare. There was no dialogue between these peaceniks and secessionists. The former just listened to the anti-India outbursts of Geelanis that must have gladdened the hearts of their Pakistani masters.

If the purpose of sending the Parliamentary delegation was to understand the anger and misery of ordinary citizens, including the Kashmiri Hindus who had been forced to live as refugees in their own country and of the people of Jammu and Ladakh, it was defeated. What the nation and the world heard were not the “legitimate” grievances of the entire population but the outlandish cry for “azadi” and demonization of our army. The self-styled flag-bearers of "secularism”, inadvertently or otherwise, brought the international focus back on these traitors. Were the peaceniks unaware of the motives of the secessionists? More than two years ago, on August 25, 2008 to be exact, Geelani expounded his “plans for Kashmir” in an interview to senior journalist, Asha Khosa of Rediffmail.com. He said, “I have a three point target, first to impose Islamic Nizam (jurisprudence) in J&K. Islam should govern our political thought, socio economic plans, culture and the ongoing movement. The creed of socialism and secularism should not touch our lives and we must totally be governed by Koran and Sunnat (precedents from Prophet Muhammad’s life)”. Demand for “azadi” is a camouflage. Their not-so-hidden agenda is Islamization of J&K through terrorism, subversion, mob violence and media manipulation.

In Jammu the delegation faced protests from BJP, Kashmiri Pandits and refugees from West Pakistan and PoK over the denial of adequate opportunity to put across their views. There was visible anger and frustration among the people over certain delegates finding time to visit the residences of separatist leaders but had little time to listen to the grievances of the citizens of the region that want total integration of the state with the rest of India. A senior member of the delegation, Arun Jaitley, has this to say, “The neglected regions of Jammu and Ladakh nurture a profound sense of discrimination. They feel that in terms of sharing of political power and economic resources they are the discriminated regions. Their emotions and arguments were hugely persuasive”. However, the package announced by the Government after the delegation’s return from J&K doesn’t reflect people of Jammu’s “hugely persuasive sentiments and arguments”.

The 8-point package announced by Home Minister P Chidambram is a mixed bag. The decision to open schools and colleges in the valley and providing RS 100 crore as additional assistance for infrastructure in educational institutions are welcome steps. The announcement to set up special task forces to look into the development needs of Jammu and Ladakh regions creates flicker of hope among the people. These regions had long been discriminated against. Concrete action on this front would go a long way to remove their half-a-century old grievances. The initiative to set up a group of interlocutors under the leadership of an eminent person to begin the process of sustained dialogue with all sections of the society can deliver if the interlocutors chosen for the job are credible persons. Among the names doing the rounds in political circles are that of Sitaram Yachuri and Digvijay Singh. Both are totally unacceptable. Picking either of them for the sensitive task of engaging the people of J&K for restoring normalcy and ending discrimination against Jammu and Ladakh would be counter-productive.

One of the major concessions to mainstream parties in Kashmir is the decision to review notifications declaring certain areas as “disturbed”. It is a delicate matter that won’t brook any hasty decision as it would also involve re-deployment of security forces. The Unified Command, of which the security forces are a part, would meet soon to take decisions on several sensitive issues like reducing the number of bunkers and checkpoints in disturbed cities like Srinagar. Since the separatists have already issued yet another calendar of protests that also involve stone pelting as a weapon to provoke the police and security forces to react, the Unified Command, one hope, would take a considered view of the ground realities even while taking measures that would help restore normalcy in the valley. That there is no mention of any move to dilute or withdraw the Armed Forces Special Powers Act is a saving grace keeping in view the fact that several state parties, including National Conference, had been forcefully demanding dilution/withdrawal of the Act. BJP is perhaps the only party that was opposed to any dilution of the law. The armed forces have repeatedly made it clear that it would be extremely difficult for them to counter terrorists and insurgents in the absence of such a law.

One of the most outrageous initiatives is to release all youth arrested for stone pelting during the last three months. Agreed, that the police do sometime take into custody innocent bystanders while the mischief mongers escape after attacking the police and security forces. There is no harm in releasing those that are found innocent after verifying that they were not part of the organized gangs of trouble makers. The harsh reality is that boys don’t always resort to throwing rocks at the police because of any provocation from the later. Most of them are organized and paid workers of the separatists who act as per instructions from their paymasters. This was again proved last week when they pelted stones at buses carrying students to their educational institutions in defiance of Geelani’s call for boycott of schools and colleges. Release of all of them, therefore, would be disastrous. More preposterous is the move to grant ex-gratia RS five lakh to the family of each of those killed during disturbances since June 11. Cases of collator damage like that of the young boy Matoo who lost his life because a teargas shell hit him as he was returning from a tution class are exceptions. The authorities need to be liberal and humane in dealing with such cases. But to compensate families of those who were actively involved in attacking the security forces amounts to encouraging more violence. The Union Government’s approach to the problem is confused and halting. Let the Government understand the ground reality. While common people in J&K are fed up with long spells of cross-border terrorism, insurgency and mob violence and want peace to be restored, the separatists are bent upon prolonging the agony. They will have to be dealt with a heavy hand and Article 370 that breeds separatism will have to go if the state is to live in peace and lead to prosperity.

BJP leaders meet PM, demand recall of K’taka Guv

New Delhi: Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Wednesday over the role of Karnataka Governor HR Bhardwaj in the ongoing political crisis in the state.

BJP's senior most leader LK Advani along with Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj, Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley and Venkaiah Naidu met the Prime Minister at 7 Race Course Road and sought the recall of Bhardwaj.

Briefing the media after the meeting, Arun Jaitley said, “Today we met the Prime Minister in the leadership of Advaniji. We have submitted a detailed memorandum. The talks were only regarding the Governor of Karnataka. We have demanded that he should be recalled immediately.”

“We have also told him that the Governor is not politically impartial. He has failed to politically detach himself from his past. The Raj Bhavan in Banglaore has been converted into an epicentre for horsetrading to destabilise the government,” Jaitley said in an open attack on Bhardwaj.

The 28-month old BJP government in Karnataka – first for the party south of the Vindhyas - has been in the thick of a crisis since 11 of its legislators, along with five Independents, rebelled against the leadership of Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa.

The Chief Minister won a confidence motion in the state Assembly by voice vote amid chaotic scenes Monday, prompting the Governor to recommend President's Rule in the state.

Yesterday, the Governor gave Yeddyurappa a 'fresh opportunity' to prove majority in the house Thursday.

Jaitley said that the power to advise the Assembly or the government can never be contrary to the Constitution. The Governor’s advice that the Speaker should not act as per the 10th schedule – disqualifying the rebels under the Anti-defection Law - is against the Constitution, he pointed out.

“As per the Assembly register the BJP was in majority and the vote was passed by a voice vote,” Jaitley said in defence of the controversial Vote of Confidence that was won by the Yeddyurappa government on October 11.

Taking his point forward Jaitley also pointed out that the Governor had, soon after the voice vote, made the recommendation for President’s Rule and then within 24-hours changed his stand and called for a fresh vote of confidence on October 14.

“Constitutional functionaries are expected to act in dignity and restraint, they don’t act on impulse. The nation has not been told why he changed his stand within 24 hours. Neither his action nor his language is in consonance with a constitutional functionary,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Independent MLAs who were disqualified by the Speaker ahead of the trust vote on October 11, have moved the High Court today seeking special voting powers, so as to make them eligible to take part in the Vote of Confidence scheduled for tomorrow.

The High Court had, yesterday, after hearing the case challenging the disqualification of the MLAs by the Speaker had posted the matter for October 18.

Krushak Morcha stages protest in Cuttack over revamp of land acquisition laws

Krushak Morcha stages protest in Cuttack over revamp of land acquisition laws
CUTTACK(visakeo)

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Krushak Morcha of Cuttack district on Monday staged a protest meeting here in front of the district Collectorate and submitted a memorandum to the Collector that was addressed to the President of India.

As part of its country-wide programme, hundreds of party workers under the leadership of city BJP chief Asit Bose came in a rally and staged a dharna in front of the Collectorate before submitting the memorandum to the Collector.

The memorandum calls for massive revamp of archaic land acquisition laws that had been in force for over hundred years now. “The present land acquisitions for industrial purposes are being done as per the Act of 1894 promulgated by the Britishers,” said Bose.

The archaic law needs to be drastically changed for the benefit of the farmers.
“Large patches of agricultural land are now giving space for industrial units and the poor farmers who own the land are cheated with paltry compensation,” Bose alleged.

The memorandum has also come down heavily on faulty agricultural policy of the country which has resulted in lakhs of farmers committing suicide. Subsidies on agriculture are being slashed, the market price of farm produce are not encouraging for which farmers are now quitting agriculture and looking for other avenues to eke out a living, the memorandum said among other things.

After the controversial trust vote in Karnataka Assembly, the action is set to shift to the capital with Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa scheduled to arrive here on Tuesday with his supporting MLAs to meet the President in a bid to prove that he commands majority.

Sources said Yeddyurappa is likely to arrive in the capital with his MLAs in the afternoon. However, with President Pratibha Patil away in Pune, he may have to wait till the evening to meet her.

"Today all BJP MLAs and MPs (from Karnataka) are going to Delhi under the leadership of Nitin Gadkari, Sushma Swaraj and L K Advani. We are going to meet the President of India and we are going to explain everything to the President, the Prime Minister and the Home Minister," Yeddyurappa told reporters at the Bangalore airport before leaving for Delhi.

With Speaker K G Bopaiah disqualifying 11 rebel party MLAs and five independents, the strength of the Karnataka Assembly has been reduced to 208. As such the BJP government claims the support of 106 members, two above the halfway mark.

The Karnataka BJP unit as well as some Central leaders of the party have been demanding the recall of Governor H R Bhardwaj. Yeddyurrappa is likely to press this demand when he meets the President, the sources said.

Meanwhile, the BJP core group is scheduled to meet under the chairmanship of the party president at Advani's residence to discuss the situation in Karnataka and decide the future course of action.

M Venkaiah Naidu, who is part of the core group and is handling the crisis in Karnataka, will brief senior leaders on the current situation.

The Union Cabinet is scheduled to meet this evening where the Karnataka issue is likely to come up for discussion.

After the trust vote yesterday, the Governor had sent his report to the Centre calling the events and the vote in the Assembly as "unconstitutional" and "farce" and recommended that the state should be brought under President's rule.

The Union Home Ministry has expressed concern over developments in Karnataka, especially the "abuse" of the anti-defection law by the Speaker.

Home Ministry sources said there was no no question of disqualifying Independents under the 10th Schedule of the Constitution or for that matter the dissident BJP MLAs even before the vote.

The Karnataka High Court will today hear a petition moved by the 16 MLAs challenging their disqualification.

Karnataka Governor asks CM to prove majority again

Karnataka Governor says CM's trust vote a "farce"

Share Bangalore: Karnataka Governor H R Bhardwaj on Tuesday said the trust vote win of Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa was a "farce" and offered him another chance to prove his majority in the state Assembly on October 14.

However, an unhappy Bharatiya Janata Party has asked for Bhardwaj’s removal, accusing him of misusing the Raj Bhavan to destabilize the Karnataka government.

Asking Yeddyurappa to “uphold principles of Constitutional propriety,” the Governor sent a letter to the Chief Minister on Tuesday saying that he has not proved the majority. In his letter, Bhardwaj is said to have offered Yeddyurappa another chance "in interest of fairness".

“I wanted the CM to follow certain procedures, he never communicated,” Bhardwaj said. “I am deeply hurt by the way the CM spoke at a press conference yesterday,” he said.

Terming the BJP government in Karnataka as corrupt, Bhardwaj said it was “disappointing and frustrating to see what has been happening in the state for the last one and half year” during his term as a Governor.

He said the situation in the state was “very disturbing.”

But the BJP is not buying this sudden U-turn. The Governor launched a personal attack on the BJP on Tuesday, calling the BJP government in Karnataka corrupt and indisciplined.

Meanwhile, the Karnataka CM, who is in Delhi, said he was surprised to hear of the Governor’s offer.

"I am prepared to give you another opportunity to hold a fresh vote to support your contention by October 14 at 11:00 AM," Bhardwaj said during a press conference here.

Bhardwaj had sent a letter to Yeddyurappa asking him to "demonstratively and constitutionally" prove his majority on the floor of the House.

The Governor said he found that the trust vote taken on Monday was a "farce" as there was no clear mention of the number of votes cast in favour and against the motion of confidence moved by the Chief Minister.

"The Speaker simply said that the motion was carried by a voice vote," he said, adding there cannot be a voice vote in such a crucial matter.

Bhardwaj said that the presence of a large number of uniformed police and unauthorised personnel in the Assembly had vitiated the atmosphere in the House.

Asked about his report to the Centre recommending the imposition of President's Rule in the state, Bhardwaj merely said it is based on the proceedings in the House on Monday.

He also observed that this was not the first time that the Yeddyurappa government was in trouble and pointed that the Reddy brothers had "hijacked" 50 MLAs on an earlier occasion.

"The Chief Minister was in tears ... I had sympathy for him. I have fully cooperated with the Chief Minister on all matters," he said, rejecting Yeddyurappa's charge that he was not fair to his government.

Meanwhile, senior BJP leader Arun Jaitley accused the Governor of creating the crisis in Karnataka.

“It is unprecedented that the Governor writes a letter to the Speaker directing him not to exercise his power under anti-defection law,” Jaitley said.

“The central government should recall the Governor immediately,” he said.

The Governor's missive came as the Karnataka High Court resumed hearing on the petition filed by 16 disqualified BJP MLAs challenging Speaker K G Bopaiah's action Monday.

Opposition parties criticised the Speaker's action saying there was no division of votes and claimed that there were more MLAs opposed to the government than those supporting it.

Criticising the role played by the Governor, senior BJP leader Venkaiah Naidu said Bhardwaj is trying to destabilise the Karnataka government instead of ensuring stability in the state.

He said: "We'll discuss about how the Congress is trying to destabilise the government in Karnataka using the help of the Governor. We will look into the role of the Governor, about how our MLAs were tempted and the ruckus in the House. All this looks like a pre-written script written in Delhi which has been executed in Karnataka by the Governor's office."

However, Union Law Minister Verappa Moily dismissed the charges, saying: "In our democracy anyone can can talk to anyone. But these are all allegations that are highly politically motivated and a desperate attempt by the BJP to cover their own lapses.

Thousand years of Brihadeeswarar Temple

Thousand years of Brihadeeswarar Temple
V. Shanmuganathan

One thousand years ago, the great emperor of Chola dynasty, Raja
Raja-I built a majestic temple for Lord Shiva in Thanjavur (Tanjore),
Tamil Nadu. Called Peruvuidayar Kovil, or Brihadeeswarar Temple, or
sometimes Rajarajeswaram it is on rolls of UNESCO heritage sites as
part of the circuit called “Great Living Chola Temples”. The Tamil
Nadu government recently organized a grand function, spanning over
five days, to celebrate the millennium of its consecration. A
scintillating Bharatnatyam recital by 1,000 artistes, led by eminent
danseuse Padma Subrahmanyam, took the cream of the cake. A host of
events including exhibitions, cultural shows, seminars and
deliberations were also organized to mark the occasion.
Tamil Nadu remains as the wonderful resort of classical India whether
it temple architecture, dance, vocal or instrumental music. It hosts
the oldest living temples in India, which remained unaffected by
iconoclasm of Turks, Mughals and Bahmani invaders. Temples in ancient
India were not merely centres of religion, but also art, culture,
literature and vocational training. The Brihadeeswarar Temple stands
as a reminder to our great culture, art, architecture, religion and
language. It is also a symbol of the great wealth and prowess of Chola
dynasty, which expanded its empire on Indian Ocean.
The construction of this ‘Big Temple’ begun in 1003 AD and was
completed in six years before being consecrated in 1010 AD. The unique
archaeological feature of the temple is its Vimana (temple tower)
standing 216 feet tall. The summit stone weighing about eighty tons
was dragged on to the top through a slope path from a distant Village,
called ‘Sarapallam’. It rises over the sanctum, on a square base about
a hundred feet, dominates the whole structure. Its shadow never falls
on the ground.
The valiant king Raja Raja-I, who reigned between 985 and 1014 AD, was
renowned for land and naval conquests. He found peace at the feet of
Lord Shiva. The construction of Brihadeeshwara temple coincides with a
visible shift in his policies from military expansion to internal
administration. But here is a lesson for us. Neither he, nor his
illustrious son Rajendra I (who built the famous Shiva temple at
Gangaikonda Cholapuram similar in design to Brihadeeshwara temple)
neglected external and internal security unlike some people, who
weakened the martial spirit of India through.
The distinct feature of Brihadeeshwara temple is magnificent monolith
Nandi bull, the mount of Lord Shiva, facing the temple tower. The
shrine of goddess Brihanayaki, Ganapati, Subrmanya, Dakshinamurty,
Nataraja are finely carved. The corridor surrounding the sanctum is a
treasure chest of Chola painting and sculpture. The walls of this
cave-like corridor were plastered with lime and used as a large canvas
for the paintings.
The paintings, which have survived time and a seventeenth century
coat of paint, are very beautiful in detail and colour and accuracy.
The story of Sundaramurthy Nayanar reaching Kailash on a white
elephant is depicted on another wall. Karuvur Thevar, the Guru of Raja
Raja is portrayed in an impressive manner. While the sculptures of
Shiva in this corridor are imposing and colossal, the series of eighty
one dance poses are superb illustrations of the Natya Sastra.
There is an interesting and popular story about the deep personal
interest that the King evinced in the construction of the temple. It
is said that one day, when the chief sculptor was deeply absorbed in
chiseling the huge Nandi, King Raja Raja Chola went and stood by his
side. The sculptor, thinking that it was his boy attendent standing by
his side ordered him to prepare a pan (betel leaf with araca nut and
lime). The king calmly obliged, folded a couple of betel leaves and
handed it over to the sculptor who received it without seeing the
hands that supplied them. Chewing the pan in his mouth, the sculptor
started uttering words of praise, appreciating the king who planned
this unique monument. Later he asked his attendant to bring the
spitton near him. The king silently obeyed. When the sculptor raised
his head after spitting the chewed betel leaves, he was terribly
shocked to see the great Raja Raja Chola standing in front of him
Immediately he touched the feet of the king with tears and made an
apology to the emperor, in a voice choked with emotion. The king, with
a smiling face, lifted him up and consoled him by telling that it was
a rare privilege for him to serve the sculptor whose hands chiseled
the sculptures of the magnificent temple. Raja Raja Chola, though a
worshiper of Shiva, at the same time, was tolerant to other religions.
He endowed and built temple of Maha Vishnu. He granted a village to
the Buiddhist Vihara at Nagappattinam.
The Brihadeeswara temple was not act of royal fancy. It is iconic of
the glory of Tamil Saiva Siddhanta. Amongst two principal schools of
Bhakti cult prevalent in South India, Saivism has a larger following.
In Tamil districts of Sri Lanka Saivism holds unchallenged sway. In
Saiva Siddhanta Shiva is believed to exercise the functions of
creation, protection, destruction, prevention from lapses is the
result of enjoyment of one’s action and beneficent action. These
functions He is said to discharge with a view to release the
struggling souls from the bondage of karma, and present unto them the
ultimate knowledge of Shiva. The goal of individual souls is to
realize that it is made of Shiva-Tatva (element of Shiva), and though
not merging in Shiva, remain at its feet like beloved child. The icon
of Lord Nataraja is most symbolic of Saiva Siddhanta. Temple worship
is an indispensable part of Saiva Siddhanta. That might explain why
Tamils have an image of orthodox and scrupulous temple goers.
Raja Raja Chola’s period was one of height of Saivism. This had been
made possible by the surge of Shiva devotion brought by Nayanar saints
in previous centuries. The heart melting hymns (Devaram) to Lord Shiva
by Sambandar, Appar and Sundaramurthy as well as Manikkavasagar in the
9th century who wrote Tiruvasagam. They, in reality, were the pioneers
of Bhakti movement that later swept across other parts of India in the
medieval age.
He was an extra ordinarily powerful king and a grand monrch of
southern India. His army crossed the ocean by ships and conquered many
islands. His was a versatile personality. It is a matter of pride that
Tanjore temple attracted the appreciation of UNESCO for its art and
architecture. Brihadeeswara Temple, is the shining Jewel in the crown
of Bharatmata. Nodout, it is, Tamilnadu’s contribution to the pride of
India. Let us all celebrate this one thousand years architectural
wonder.
