THANE, 10 October 2012 : An illegal slaughterhouse in Wada tehsil in Thane was raided and 22 cattle head rescued by the Thane rural police and animal activists on Friday night. An FIR has been registered in the case.

On Friday morning, Chetan Sharma, a member of NGO People for Animals, received information that an illegal slaughterhouse was operating in Wada.

“Acting on the information, we conducted a raid on the premises at around 10.30 pm Friday night that lasted until after midnight with around 15 cops taking part. The cattle were being kept in an old, broken enclosure that had no roof. The accused used to slaughter the animals there and transport the meat,” said Deputy Superintendent of police, Thane rural, Shrinivas Ghadge.

“When we reached the spot, there was blood everywhere and we found two axes covered with blood but the butchers had run away. We rescued 22 cows and female calves, slaughtering of which is prohibited under the Maharashtra Animal Preservation Act,” said Sharma.

The accused has been identified as Salman Nazim Kuthe and booked under sections 429 (mischief by killing or maiming cattle) and 379 (theft) of the IPC and relevant sections of the Maharashtra Animal Preservation Act and Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.

“The accused is absconding and a search is on for him. We will also probe the role of his father Nazim, who is old and bedridden but who may have been involved,” said police inspector Sanjay Dhumal, Wada police station. The animals have been sent to a gaushala in Angaon.
