Tribals demand marriage of run with rapist

Bhubaneswar:(Visakeo) More than five thousand women of K Nuagaon block in Orissa’s Kandhamal district on Monday gheraoed the local Block Office and demanded that the rapist should be married to the nun, who is claiming to be raped. The nun was raped August 26 in Kandhamal district, where communal clashes have claimed around 35 lives and rendered thousands homeless.

The demand of the locals came a day, when the three accused arrested in the nun rape case, were on their way to Orissa for further interrogation. The women argued that in their tradition, if a man exchanged physical relationship with a woman forcibly, he should be married to the victim. “So we demanded that if the nun was raped, she should be married to the rapist,” the agitating women said.

Three people who were arrested in Kerala’s Palakkad district Saturday for their alleged involvement in the rape of a nun. The arrested, identified as Mitu Patnaik, Saroj Ghadai and Munna Ghadai, were held from Kizhakkanchery in Palakkad by a team of crime branch officials from Orissa with the help of Kerala police. The three, all natives of Baliguda in Orissa, were working in a rice-mill here.
