Police inaction in Laxmanananda case decried

Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati, while observing his death anniversary here on Thursday, condemned the police inaction and the State Government’s apathy in arresting the killers of the Swami and his four associates in Kandhamal in 2008.

Gracing the occasion, Laxmanananda’s close associate Swami Pranarupananda Saraswati said the work and service done by the Swami for tribal people in the area would be an example for the forthcoming generation. He had transformed the tribals’ lives, but his murder left a great space which cannot be fulfilled, he added.

Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati Memorial Trust member Dr Laxmikant Das said the State Government has not taken any step to arrest the culprits of the sensational murder case. Even the High Court had given an order to start investigation into the case on the basis of informants’ data, but the concerned officials failed to take any initiative, he added.

The followers observed the assassination day of the Hindu seer as the Dharmaraksha Divas. Like the capital city, several such programmes were held at Jaleshapata and Chakapada villages in Kandhamal district where Laxmanananda was staying with his associates.

It may be noted that the death of Swami Laxmanananda had led to communal riots in Kandhamal. After the violence, the State Government set up a Commission of Inquiry headed by Justice Sarat Chandra Mohapatra, who has recently died.
