IAF engaged in Orissa flood relief
Shillong, Sep 15 : The Indian Air Force (IAF) is carrying out flood relief operations in parts of Orissa since the last two days, an official said here Thursday.

"Over 15 sorties have been flown by IAF helicopters and (they) have airlifted 36 tonnes of food packets and dry rations,” said Ranjeeb Sahoo, IAF spokesman at the Eastern Air Command headquarters here.

He said two MI-17 helicopters drawn from IAF station Kumbhigram in Assam have been pressed into service and are operating from the Bhubaneswar airfield.

Floods triggered by heavy rains over the past week and huge discharge of water from Hirakud dam have claimed at least 19 lives in Orissa and displaced tens of thousands of people. The situation continues to be grim in 19 of the state's 30 districts.
