MAOISTS’ HAND IN SWAMI’S MURDER: NAIDU PANEL

Bhubaneswar,22/12-Without going to the details into his report submitted to the State Government on Tuesday, retired Judge of the Orissa High Court Justice, AS Naidu, who headed the one-man panel to probe into the 2008 Kandhamal riots, has indicated the role of Maoists in the murder of Viswa Hindu Parishad (VHP) leader Swami Laxamanananda Saraswati.
“The circumstantial evidences as well as the situations that led to the murder and the post-murder developments have clearly indicated the role of Maoists in the murder of Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati,” Justice Naidu said here after submission of his report to the Government. It may be mentioned that Swami and four of his associates were brutally murdered at his Jalaspeta Ashram in Kandhamal district in the evening of August 23, 2008 when the ashram was agog with Janmastami celebrations. Soon after, the whole of Kandhamal witnessed massive ethno-communal riots leading to anarchy.
In October 2013, a lower court in Kandhamal had held one P Rama Rao alias Udaya, a Maoist leader from Andhra Pradesh, guilty of the murder of the VHP leader and his disciples. Earlier, the same court had also convicted seven other Maoists for the crime.
It is also learnt that Justice Naidu in his report has dealt significantly about the various causes responsible for repeated ethno-communal riots in Kandhamal district. The district had also witnessed riots in the years 2007 and 1977,” Justice Naidu said, adding that he has also made certain suggestions in his report as to curb such riots.
