‘RELIGIOUS CONVERSION BEHIND 2007 K’MAL RIOT’

‘RELIGIOUS CONVERSION BEHIND 2007 K’MAL RIOT’

Bhubaneswar,26/12-The Justice Basudev Panigrahi Commission, which probed the communal riots in Kandhamal district in 2007, has submitted its report to the State Government, saying religious conversion among many other reasons was the main cause for the riots which had erupted on December 24, 2007 in the district.
The commission has submitted a 560-page report to the Home Secretary on December 11 wherein it had proposed many suggestions to the Government.
“Religious conversion was the main cause behind the communal riot. Besides, many other issues are also responsible for the malady. I have pointed this in my report,” said Justice Panigrahi.
He also suggested many proposals to the Government to avoid any such further happenings.
“The Government should focus on ensuring ample facilities like healthcare, proper education and other opportunities to the Kandhamal locals,” said Justice Panigarhi to reporters.
The Government had appointed Justice Panigrahi to probe the riot in January 2008.
The inquiry by the retired judge was ordered by the Government after a spate of communal violence in the district from December 24, 2007 on the eve of the Christmas celebrations, which had claimed lives of three persons, one at Bramhanigaon and two at Barkhama. Several houses and religious places were destroyed in the riots.
