REHMAN’S MADRASA SHUTDOWN; STUDENTS GO BACK HOMES

Bhubaneswar,19/12-In a significant move, the Cuttack district administration on Saturday shut down the illegal madrasa, which was run by arrested al-Qaeda terrorist Abdul Rehman, as all the 71 students of it were handed over to their parents to take them back home.
Rehman was running the madrasa appointing five teachers for last two years at Tangi, 25 km from here.
“While 56 students left for their homes today, three and 12 students had vacated the madrasa on Thursday and Friday, respectively,” informed District Child Protection Officer (DCPO) Pragati Mohanty on Saturday, adding that most of the students were from Jharkhand and it was ensured that all of them were handed over to their guardians after verification of their identities.
While local police are guarding the vacated madrasa, two of its teachers are now detained by the Cuttack city police for questioning. Rehman was very close to these teachers and spent a lot of time with them, sources said, adding that the al-Qaeda facilitator had taken the piece of land at a deserted place in Tangi on lease from one Shiraj-ud-din, a businessman of Cuttack city.
Meanwhile, the city police, which booked Rehaman under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act on Friday, are planning to send a team to Jharkhand for further investigations into his alleged involvement in motivating youths to join the militant organisation. He was frequently travelling to some remote areas in Jharkhand and was under the scanner of local police after a nudge from the Intelligence Bureau (IB).
Moreover, the investigating police continued to verify the banking transactions of Rehman for the third day on Saturday. He reportedly operated three bank accounts in two separate local branches here of two nationalised banks, which have overseas branches in London. A bank officer informed that huge amounts were credited to one of his accounts twice recently through National Electronic Fund Transfer (NEFT) and Rehman withdrew the amount in a phased manner.
