People in Odisha were shocked to come across reports in a section of the media that the Indian Mujahideen (IM) also had plans to target Shree Jagannath’s last Rath Yatra at Puri. IM members Tehsin Akhtar and Pakistani bomb-maker Waqas have reportedly revealed such deadly plans of the IM during their interrogation by the Delhi Police’s Special Cell.
The reports quoting sources said the IM members also revealed plans to carry a fresh attack on the Buddhist shrine Bodh Gaya in Bihar after their first attempt failed to yield desired results. These inputs have been shared with Bihar and Odisha security agencies apart from Central agencies, the reports said. Sources in the Odisha police said some of these inputs were found to be incorrect, exaggerated and baseless.
The IM”s idea was to create a stampede-like situation in the Puri Rath Yatra by planting serial bombing to achieve maximum casualties. A Special Cell team is camping in Bhubaneswar to recover a laptop that has the elaborate plans to carry out the attack, the reports further stated.
The attack on Rath Yatra at Puri was conceptualised the way the Patna rally blasts were executed, sources said. The SIMI members have been instructed to carry out the serial blasts that would trigger stampede.
