Merit be the only cracteria while deciding our future Prime Ministers or ‘Secularism’.

Merit be the only cracteria while deciding our future Prime Ministers or ‘Secularism’.

Now that the Chief Minister of Bihar
has dragged ‘succularism’ into the political discourse, it is time to
deconstruct it so that we can end this pointless debate once and for all. I
have deliberately misspelt the word because when said in Hindi that is how it
is usually pronounced. It is a hard word to write in devnagri and the Hindi and
Urdu equivalents do not quite mean what secularism has come to mean in the
Indian political context. It is a foreign word that evolved in a European
context when the powers of the church and the state were separated. In India,
since none of our religions were led by pontiffs who controlled armies, or had
vast temporal powers, we had no need to make this separation. But, the word
secularism is used in India more than almost any other country. Why?
Well, because when we entered our
current era of coalition governments, political parties of leftist disposition
found it convenient to keep the BJP out of power by saying they would only ally
with ‘succular phorces’. The BJP became a pariah after the Babri Masjid came
down and so whenever someone like Nitish Kumar wants to hurl abuse at the party
he is in alliance with in Bihar, or one of its leaders, the ‘secularism’ debate
gets revived.
Currently, he appears to be
positioning himself for prime minister in 2014 and seems to believe that he
will only be in the running for this job if he can eliminate Narendra Modi
before the race begins. He is not alone in this endeavour. On my wanderings in
Delhi’s corridors of power last week, I ran into journalists and politicians
who went on and on about how Modi could never be prime minister because of the
violence in Gujarat in 2002.
They said pretty much what the Chief
Minister of Bihar, and his cohorts, have said which is that the prime minister
must be a man who is ‘clean and secular’. So how do we explain Rajiv Gandhi?
How should we understand why he was given the biggest mandate in Indian
parliamentary history after justifying the pogroms that killed thousands more
Sikhs in 1984 than Muslims were killed in Gujarat in 2002? Were Indian voters
un-secular when they gave him more than 400 seats in the Lok Sabha?
If there were still a chance of
major communal riots in the future, there may have been some point to reviving
this talk of secularism. But, there has not been a single major Hindu-Muslim
riot since 2002 despite Muslims from next door having been responsible for the
worst terrorist attack on Indian soil in 2008. Before 26/11, there were other
attacks by Islamists on Hindu temples, commuter trains in Mumbai, stadiums in
Hyderabad and bazaars in Delhi. None of these ugly acts of violence caused
riots. Our 24-hour news channels have made communal riots impossible and the
average Muslim has begun to understand this. I noticed this while travelling in
Uttar Pradesh during the recent elections.
So let us stop this silly talk of
secularism and communalism and start demanding from those who want to become
India’s next prime minister that they tell us what they can do for this
country. Here is my own list of questions. What will the next Prime Minister do
to end the licence raj that prevents the education system from achieving its
full potential? What will he do to fix our broken public healthcare system?
What will he do to make sure that every Indian has enough electricity to at
least light a few bulbs and run a ceiling fan in his home? What will he do to
create new jobs for the estimated 13 million young Indians who enter the job
market every year? What will he do to revive the Indian economy? What steps
will he take to ensure that India becomes a fully developed country by the
middle of this century?
When I heard Aung San Suu Kyi’s
address to both houses of Britian’s Parliament in Westminster hall last week,
what impressed me was the clarity with which she spelt out her vision for her
country. But, throughout her speech, something kept bothering me and by the
time she finished, I discovered what it was. What bothered me was that I could
not think of a single Indian leader who could make such a speech.
The Indian political landscape today
has become a desert in which only the stunted progeny of stunted political
leaders bloom. We need our political parties to throw up real leaders and we
need a political discourse in which real political problems are discussed. So
can we stop fishing ‘secularism’ out of the dustbin of history and holding it
up as a shining ideal? Its relevance faded a long time ago.

18 rescued kids returned to parents in Gajapati

Eighteen children from Gajapati district who were rescued by the State Government from Tamil Nadu, were on Saturday handed over to their parents.

But there have been allegations that many more children from Gajapati and other parts of south Odisha are still in Kerala and Tamil Nadu living with an uncertain future.

http://www.dailypioneer.com/state-editions/bhubaneswar/77103-18-rescued-kids-returned-to-parents-in-gajapati.html

The children are said to be in distress. The team, which had gone to Tirunelveli in Tamil Nadu to bring back the 18 children originally rescued by the TN police from inside a church, handed over the children to their parents who are natives of Gumma block in the district

It may be noted that 20 days back, some organisations had taken the children from different places of the block by giving assurance to their parents to provide good education with other amenities. But, the children were in distress in the church campus. When the local District Welfare Officer got information about the children, they conducted a raid with the help of police and the Child Welfare Committee.

After the children arrived at the Brahmpur railway station, the district administration received them and took them to the Swadhara home at Patikota village under Gosani block in the district on Friday. On Saturday, they were handed over to their parents.

KOCHI, JUNE 30,2012 : A 19-year-old girl who eloped with her lover submitted before the Kerala High Court that about 30 girls belonging to various religions were undergoing religious instructions in Sathyasarani Religious Educational Institute, Manjeri, hinting at the possible religious conversions taking place in the state.

The statement was made by the girl in a Habeas Corpus petition filed by her father stating that his daughter was in the illegal custody of a person called Mohammed Hassan. The girl, a Hindu, was a parallel college student when she entered into a relationship with Mohammad Hassan alias Amnas. In her deposition before the court, she stated that she was converted to Islam and her ‘nikah’ was held at Kondotty. However, in another deposition before the court, Hassan denied having conducted the marriage.

The petitioner, father of the girl, pointed out that the court should also look into the status of the 42 girls missing from in and around Manjeri under similar circumstances admitted in the same religious institution.

In her deposition, the girl stated that on June 9 this year, she had eloped with Hassan to Bangalore. They stayed in a lodge till June 17. The next day, they appeared before the Judicial First Class Magistrate Court, Tirur. She submitted that at present she is staying at Sathyasarani Religious Educational Institute.

Hassan admitted before the court that they had eloped to Bangalore and stayed at the lodge. He had taken the girl to Maunathul Islam Association, Ponnani, for converting the girl to Islam, but they returned from that place as it was not safe or clean. He further submitted that he would marry her provided she converts to Islam.

Considering the petition, a Division Bench comprising Justice K T Sankaran and M L Joseph Francis sent the girl to Santhiniketan hostel in Kochi. “The girl is confused and knows nothing about conversion to another religion, nor is she capable of taking independent decisions,” the court observed and posted the case to July 4.

COIMBATORE, JUNE 30,2012 : Pointing to serious gaps in the anti-human trafficking setup in the State, 19 children, hailing from Odisha and Jharkhand, were found illegally confined in an unauthorised children’s home in the district.

This has come to light barely four-days after a batch of 18 Odisha children were rescued from a church premise in Kanyakumari district.

The Social Welfare Department unearthed the racket while probing the recent incident in Kanyakumari district. “We found that the children were brought to Kanyakumari by the accused priest Claret from the Blessing Welfare Society located at Sirumugai in Coimbatore district,” said a highly-placed source.

The Coimbatore district police had alerted the Social Welfare Department about large number of Odisha children illegally held at the Blessing Welfare Society home nearly nine months. But apparently, the officials had not considered the tip-off with due seriousness even in the wake of 23 Nepal girls rescued from the Micheal Job Orphange.

Rajkumar, who was running the home, is now under judicial custody after the Kanyakumari police arrested him three days ago. “The children were taken from the parents by promising that they will be given quality education and other facilities. But the children were not even sent to school and were kept confined in a room under inhumane conditions,” said Pradip K Patra, state coordinator of Integrated Child Protection Scheme (ICPS), Odisha, who is in the State to retrieve the children.

Nellai Group Homeward
The Tirunelveli Child Welfare Committee was on Wednesday ordered to take back the 18 children rescued from a church, to their native, Odisha. B Nalan of the CWC said the children left for Odisha on a train via Chennai on Wednesday.

11th National Training Camp of Rashtriya Muslim Manch

11th National Training Camp of Rashtriya Muslim Manch

PUSHKAR (RAJASTHAN), JUNE 30, 2012 : “Muslims in India have not come from outside but belong to this country and is an inseparable part of the national life of this country like their Hindus”, observed K S Sudarshan, former Sarsanghchalak of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) here on Tuesday.

Sudarshan was delivering inaugural speech at the inauguration of the 11th National Training Camp of Muslim Rashtriya Manch (MRM) at Hotel New Park here at the historical township of Pushkar. MRM National Convener Mohd,. Afzal, co-convener and incharge of the camp Abbas Ali Bohra, Chhattisgarh Waqf Board Chairman Salim Ashrafi and former national convener of MRM Salavat Khan were prominently present on the dais.

Sudarshan said that all those living in India were Hindus. He narrated an incident from the life of Shahi Imam of Jama Masjid of Delhi while he was on haj pilgrimage to Mecca. There he was asked to state his identity which came out to be Hindu as he was from Hindustan. Hence, Sudarshan said “we are all Hindus and this is our country Hindustan”.

Delving into the historical beginning of Muslim Rashtriya Manch a decade ago the former RSS Chief said that he had asked former President of All India Imam Council Maulana Jameel Iliyasi as to why the Muslims considered themselves as ‘minority’ when they belonged to this society and country as much as the Hindus?

The former RSS Chief who was most respectfully referred to as ‘Param Sarsanghchalak’ by Imran Chaudhary and Mohd Afzal, explained in detail how the British rulers wedged a divide between the Hindus and Muslims after 1857 war which both had fought together and how the Congress in independent India reduced the Muslims to a mere vote bank. He also narrated the role of the then RSS Chief M S Golwalkar in persuading Maharaja Hari Singh of Kashmir to merge his state in India.

He appealed the Muslims to understand this game of the Congress party and save themselves from being reduced to mere vote bank in the future.

MRM National Convener Mohd Afzal in his speech traced the beginning of MRM and said that the MRM endeavored to impress upon the people that Islam is really the religion of peace and that there was no place for violence and terrorism in the name of Islam.

Referring to the fatwa issued by the Darul-uloom Deoband against terrorism in the name of religion, he said that it was the efforts and campaign by the MRM that prompted Deoband to issue such a fatwa denouncing terrorism and wanton killings in the name of jihad and religion.

He said that the MRM activists have unfurled the national tricolor at Srinagar in Kashmir and sang Vande Mataram there braving all adverse situations. Not only this, the MRM participated in the MRM delegates participated in the Amarnath Shrine Board agitation and submitted a memorandum containing signatures of 10 lakh Muslims from the country to the President demanding ban on cow slaughter.

He said that the MRM believed in the concept of Hindutva which according to him was all encompassing and included the gurudwaras, churches and baba garib nawaz meaning the Sikhs, Christians and Muslims are covered by the term Hindu.

Referring to the current debate on RSS Chief Mohan Bhagwat’s statement on who should become the next prime minister of the country, Afzal said amidst thunderous applause that the MRM felt that the next prime minister should be a ‘swayamsevak’ of RSS.

He said that the MRM would set up a blood bank shortly and to mark the beginning of this project a blood donation camp would be conducted on June 27 at the camp venue. He said that Abbas Ali Bohra, national co-convener of the MRM has declared to finance the project.

Earlier, Dr Munnavar Chaudhary, Convener of Rajasthan made the introductory remarks while Abubaker Naqavi, co-convener conducted the program.

The three-day event will discuss issues in Jammu and Kashmir in the light of the report of the interlocutors appointed by the union government on Kashmir problem, and other organizational matters. Mentor of MRM Indresh Kumar will also be interacting with the participating delegates. Over 200 activists from 25 states were participeted in this three-day event.

KOCHI, JUNE 30, 2012 : Immediately after the announcement from NSS General Secretary Sukumaran Nair and SNDP General Secretary Vellappally Natesan to work together against the blatant minority appeasement of UDF Government, Muslim League State General Secretary E.T.Basheer came out with the comments that these two organizations cannot come together because of their differences about reservation.Vellappally Natesan gave a quick reply this time; the reservation is not going to wreck their decision to work together since they have realized the folly of their separation and how the so called minorities have taken advantage of their divisive stance.

Muslim organizations could not hide their embarrassment about this sudden happening and Jamayat Council’s State General Secretary Adv.A.Pookunju went a step ahead of E.T.Basheer and made an observation that the SNDP should remain with backward communities and lead them from the front to safeguard the reservation being enjoyed by them. He added that the decision of NSS and SNDP to work together will be a threat to the religious harmony in the state and could lead to internal altercation.

NEW DELHI, JUNE 30, 2012 : Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorist Abu Jundal has confirmed that he and other 26/11 masterminds had plotted to make the attack appear as a handiwork of Hindu radicals upset with the slain Maharashtra ATS chief Hemant Karkare.

Sources familiar with Jundal's interrogation quoted him saying that it was the Maharashtra-born terrorist who thought of giving it a Hindu hue. Karkare, who was killed in the 26/11 terror attack, had arrested alleged Hindu terrorists — including Sadhvi Pragya Singh and Lt Colonel Prasad Purohit — for the 2008 Malegaon blasts.

As part of the deception, gunman Ajmal Kasab and the other terrorists were made to wear saffron wristbands (maulis). Also, IDs bearing Hindu names like Sameer Chaudhary, were organized. The terrorists were taught the basics of Hindi usage by Jundal.

The plan would have succeeded had all the terrorists been killed. But Ajmal Kasab's capture was a spanner in the works, although it did not deter many from publicly expressing the suspicion that 26/11 may have been meant to avenge Karkare's action against Hindu radicals.

Jundal told interrogators that he had drafted the email in Hindi that was sent to media houses attributing the authorship of the attack to a fictional group, Deccan Mujahidin. An MA in Hindi literature, Jundal was best suited for the job.

Jundal, who is reportedly the highest ranking Indian in the LeT hierarchy, has also disclosed various locations of Lashkar hideouts and that of the control room in Karachi, from where he along with five others gave directions to the 10 militants in Mumbai. Jundal has claimed that this control room was setup in a rented accommodation in Quaidabad locality, close to Malir Cantonment area and Jinnah International airport in Karachi.

Sources also confirmed that safety of control room was the responsibility of Major Sajid Meer of Pakistan's army, who was present there along with Lakhvi, Jundal, Zarar Shah, Muzammil and Azam Cheema. Officials say that the locality houses several Pakistani army officers and some VIPs. "For travelling from control room to the Lashkar headquarters in Karachi, they used their own vehicles," said the source.

Jundal has also provided names of some officers of ISI and the Pakistani Army apart from various LeT leaders and their hideouts, which investigators say, prove that state actors were part of the 26/11 conspiracy.

Terror alert along Odisha coastline

Terror alert along Odisha coastline

The Odisha Government has sounded high alert on the State’s long coastline in view of the terror threat looming large.

The 480-km coastline houses some important defence establishments of the country and monuments including the Jagannath Temple in Puri, the Sun Temple at Konark, Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur, Proof and Experimental Establishment (PXE) and Military Engineering Services (MES) at Chandipur, Air Defence College at Gopalpur and Defence Radar Centres at Dhamra, Mahakalapada, Chandrabhaga and Gopalpur.

“The Indian Coast Guard personnel have stepped up the security on the seawater by intensifying sea surveillance after getting warning about possible infiltration by the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Tayyeba (LeT) militants into the Odisha coast via sea route,” said Coast Guard DIG KPS Raghavanshi at Paradip.

To mitigate possible threat of cross border activities and the intrusion of LeT militants in Odisha coast, our Coast Guard ships are monitoring round the clock along the coast area. We have also entrusted helicopters to guard the coast, added a senior officer of the Coast Guard.

The fishery department and marine police have also alerted the marine fishermen and coastal people and asked them to keep vigil on the Bay of Bengal. If the suspected ships and found then would informed the security agencies, said official sources.

Though all necessary measures have been taken by the coastal security agencies, but the Odisha coast, especially from Dhamara to Paradeep, is vulnerable. Even as 26/11 terrorist attack on Mumbai was an eye opener for the State Government to enhance coastal security at several vulnerable points of the coast, but the State machineries, except setting up marine police, have failed to any thing substantial. The coasts passing along Kendrapada to Jagatisinghpur has been quite susceptible to illegal influx of foreign nationals.

Muslim League ‘hijacks’ Govt; protest growing in Kerala

Muslim League ‘hijacks’ Govt; protest growing in Kerala

तारीख: 6/29/2012 3:38:48 PM

(HAINDAVA KERALM)

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, JUNE 29,2012 : Protest is growing in Kerala against the alleged “hijacking” of the Congress-led UDF Government by the Muslim League, especially with respect to the affairs in the Ministry of Education which a Minister of that party is looking after. The Muslim League is the second largest constituent of the ruling coalition.

In the Assembly on Wednesday, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy revised a statement he made the previous day, allegedly under Muslim League pressure, to agree with its proposal to include 35 schools in Muslim-majority Malappuram district in the aided sector. He himself had said in the Assembly on Tuesday that no decision had been taken in this regard.

The somersault of the Chief Minister has irked the CPI(M)-led Opposition LDF as well as the majority community outfits. It prompted Opposition leader VS Achuthanandan to ask, “How many chief ministers does Kerala have?” while Vellappally Natesan, general secretary of Hindu Ezhavas’ outfit SNDP Yogam, said the League was plundering public resources.

G Sukumaran Nair, general secretary of the NSS, outfit of the Hindu Nair community, said “at this rate”, the Chief Minister’s office and the State Secretariat would have to be transplanted to Malappuram, known as the stronghold of the Muslim League.

Before leading the Opposition in a walkout from the Assembly in protest against the proposal and the Chief Minister’s somersault on Wednesday, Achuthanandan said the Muslim League was aiming to allot the schools to party-related managements through a huge corruption move. Even the State’s Congress unit and its students’ wing have aired open protests against the move.

This is the second controversy the Congress-led Government in Kerala has fallen into in the past two months. The new issue has come up even before the dust stirred up by the controversy over the allotment in April of a fifth Cabinet position to the Muslim League by tilting the community balance in the Government and enraging the majority communities has settled.

After a meeting of the State Cabinet on June 13, Chandy had told newsmen that the Government had decided to bring 35 schools in Malappuram district under its ownership. This decision was published in the Chief Minister’s official website also. The schools were started in 1990-91 under the Centre’s Area-Intensive Programme.

However, Muslim League’s Education Minister PK Abdu Rabb said in the Assembly on Tuesday that the Government had decided to include these schools in the aided sector. But, in his clarification, Chandy had said no final decision had been taken and it was up to him to take that decision as Chief Minister.

The Chief Minister revised this statement on Wednesday in the Assembly itself saying that the Government had already taken an in-principle decision to hand over the schools to the aided sector. He said the proposal was currently in the consideration of the Finance Department and that the UDF would discuss the matter if need be.

The Chief Minister’s statement brought the Opposition members to their feet and Achuthanandan said that Chandy revised his stand by bowing to the Muslim League’s pressure. “How many chief ministers does Kerala have? Is it that there is one for the Congress and another for the Muslim League?” he asked before announcing the decision for walkout.

Achuthanandan demanded expulsion of Abdu Rabb from the Cabinet, saying that he had derailed the Cabinet decision for the sake of corruption. Demanding a satisfactory explanation from Chandy (which he could not offer), the Opposition leader said the Government should cancel the decision to hand over the schools to the aided sector.

This is not the first time Abdu Rabb had invited the wrath of the majority communities. He was attacked last month for rechristening his residence Ganga in Thiruvananthapuram as Grace and for stating that it was a policy of the Muslim League not to light the traditional lamp (Nilavilakku, often associated with Hindu rituals) at public programmes.

Aided status to Muslim schools against High Court order

(HAINDAVA KERALM)

KOCHI, JUNE 29, 2012 : The move to grant aided status to many Muslim managed schools by Congress lead UDF government under the pressure of their key ally Muslim league has been now proved as violation of an existing court order.

In 2003, the High Court had issued a directive stating that the 35 schools that fall under the Area Intensive Scheme must not be granted the ‘aided status’ by the government. The court verdict also stated clearly that the government’s initiative was clearly ill-motivated, unlawful and one sided. The verdict was pronounced in connection with the petition filed by the Parent Teachers’ Association of AJBS School, Nellissery, Malappuram District, which sought action against the government’s plans.

Earlier also there was a move by Government to grant aided status to these schools, but due to timely intervention of court it was thwarted. Following widespread protests against proposed Area Incentive Scheme which allows Government to pay salary to these privately managed Muslim schools the GO were not then implemented and then came the Highcourt High Court verdict the scheme. The President of PTA Association of AJBS School, MK Hameed had filed the case against the government initiative. The verdict was pronounced by a bench consisting of Justice KS Radhakrishnan and Justice K Padmanabhan Nair.

According to the verdict, “the salary for teachers and other staff members of a school should be provided by the school management. This is not the responsibility of the government. If the management is incapable of doing this, the government has the right to take over the school completely or entrust its responsibilities to any other government related organizations”.

The management of as many as 25 schools from Malappuram district filed an appeal in the Supreme Court against the HC verdict. However, the government did not budge against this. Unfortunately, owing to financial constraints, the PTA Association of AJBS School could not go ahead with its appeal. Thus, the Supreme Court dismissed the case as Ex party. The Minister for Education, at the time of the verdict was ET Mohammed Bahseer.

The current UDF government is making a similar move, quite akin to the one made by the Muslim League, when the Supreme Court the verdict was announced. Things are now back in business- and the government is planning to go ahead with the granting of aided status!!

NEW DELHI, JUNE 29, 2012 : Key 26/11 handler Abu Jundal during his interrogations reportedly admitted that headquarters of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in Nagpur was on the radar of 26/11 terrorists.

Jundal was one of the Pakistani handlers who was giving instructions to the 26/11 terrorists. He reportedly identified targets for the 26/11 attacks.

During interrogations, he reportedly confessed his role in the country's worst terror attack and admitted that he was present in the Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) control room in Karachi and was giving direction to the 10 terrorists who carried out the strike.

The 26/11 handler gave a deep insight into the situation at 'Karachi control room' monitoring the Mumbai attack, sources said.

Jundal reportedly told the investigative agencies that officials of ace Pakistani intelligence agency Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) ran the control room along with senior Lashkar commander Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi. Jundal had reportedly worked in close tandem with Lakhvi.

According to national security agencies, Jundal is the highest ranked Indian in terror outfit LeT and his questioning is proving to be a key link in establishing the involvement of Pakistan state actors in the Mumbai terror attacks.

Intelligence source indicate that that he was recruited by a Kashmir-based Lashkar operative in 2005. A young Jundal is said to have been indoctrinated in those post-Gujarat-riot years. He allegedly got involved in planning for the 26/11 Mumbai terror operation at the beginning of 2008.

Sources say Jundal, as the Indian in the group, was the one who trained the terrorists who attacked Mumbai on what to wear, what to say etc. He who belongs to Beed in Maharashtra, speaks Marathi, Urdu, Hindi and also a bit of Arabic.

Jundal was recently arrested by the Special Cell of Delhi Police in connection with terrorism related cases.

About Rashtrotthana Parishat:
Rashtrottahana Parishat was started off in a rented building at South End Road in Bangalore in 1965. Now, it has turned out to be one of the leading social service organizations in the state. When the Parishat took on its task of social welfare, it was keen on retaining the essence of indigenous culture rather than grafting of alien ideologies and blind imitation of western methods. While it is true that situation at the ground level was depressing, the Parishat made it a point that social welfare should be done in keeping with nationalist ethos. The welfare activities of the Parishat have touched several hearts in its journey of transforming and enriching society.

In more than 40 years of service, the Parishat has touched all the segments of the society from the underprivileged to the most influential. Intellectuals, activists, resource persons, writers, orators, technocrats and many others have participated in this Yajnic fire of social service. With ideals at heart and ground realities in mind, the Parishat is determined to transform society with a spirit of unity. The onus of transforming and creating a positive society rests not only with us. You are also an equal partner in this transformation. Your cooperation in every sphere is sought whether it is through labour of love or assistance in any other form. Overall, we request you to be with us in this noble task of enlightening and creating a positive society.
