Nearly 20 lakh devotees witnessed famous Suna Vesha of Lord Jagannath

Bhubaneswar-
Amid a friendly weather and tight security, about 20 lakh devotees on the Monday witnessed the famous Suna Vesha of Lord Jagannath, His elder brother Balabhadra and sister Subhadra on the three Raths parked at the Simhadwar of the main temple. It was raining since morning till noon but the weather grew pleasant in the afternoon.

The Vesha was completed on time and was opened for public Darshan by 6 pm and was to continue till 11 pm in the night. A special set of servitors brought huge gold ornaments and jewellery from the temple treasury to the Raths amid tight security. Three separate set of dressers decorated the deities simultaneously on the three Raths.
Gold ornaments of various types and styles measuring about 100 kg were used to decorate the deities in complete gold. The ornaments include giant limbs like feet, hands and insignias like mace, lotus, wheel and conch. The huge gold tiaras, besides a number of special necklaces and garlands, presented a spectacular look. The deities too wear big Kundalas (earrings) in their earlobes, besides chest guards- all made of gold.
After the show is over, the ornaments would be returned to the temple treasury by the servitors on duty. The administration threw a three-layer security around the three Raths, while the Suna Vesh was in progress.
The residents, particularly residing along the Badadanda, were peeved at the faulty arrangements. They were compelled to go on a circuitous route only to arrive at the same place with no entry instruction.
The 1978 inventory of the Lords' wealth in the form of the ornaments revealed that there were 367 items of gold ornaments weighing four quintals of gold and 251 items of silver ornaments weighing 14 quintals in use. Apart from these, there were precious ornaments studded with diamond, emerald, ruby and other precious stones of rare quality and size. It is learnt that of a total seven vaults of the temple treasury only one were opened so far.
