One Acquitted in Kandhamal Nun Gangrape Case

BERHAMPUR: An accused in the nun gangrape case in Kandhamal district was acquitted by Ganjam District and Sessions Judge Madhusudan Dhal on Tuesday.
The accused, Ananga Pradhan, was named among the five persons against whom the nun’s grandfather had lodged a rape complaint on September 20, 2008. He had alleged that the nun was forcefully taken from their house on September 19 to an anganwadi centre in the village and raped by the five people.
Basing on the complaint, Tikabali police registered a case against Ananga, Manoj Pradhan, Babula Pradhan, Ranga Pradhan and a
juvenile. However, police submitted a chargesheet against Ananga only. Basing on the statements of 18 witnesses, the Judge acquitted Ananga for lack of evidence.
Special Public Prosecutor Rajendra Sahu said another accused in the case, Manoj, is absconding and trial of the rest three would be conducted separately.
