BHUBANESWAR:Around 5,000 Anganwadi workers and helpers belonging to 13 western Odisha districts, under the banner of the Pachima Odisha Anganwadi Karmi, Bhartiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS) affiliate on Monday staged a massive demonstration along the Mahatma Gandhi Marg in front of the State Assembly protesting the State Government’s apathetic attitude towards their longstanding issues.
Alleging that the State Government is betraying them, Sangha central convenor Prasanta Kumar Padhi said that though the Anganwadi workers and helpers are instrumental in successful implementation of various schemes like ‘Balika Samridhi Yojana’, ‘Kishori Shakti Yojana’, Emergency Feeding programme and family planning, they are deprived of basic minimum Government facilities.
Urging the State Government to pay salary to them as per the 12th Pay Commission recommendations and re-designate them as Anganwadi teachers instead of workers and hike their retirement age from 58 to 60, the agitators threatened to give up the additional workloads assigned by the Government from April 1 if the Government fails to consider their demands at the earliest.
The Sangha also submitted a 24-point charter of demands to the Prime Minister through the Governor, Chief Minister, Union and State Women and Child Development Ministers for their intervention.
