25 COUPLES TIE KNOT AT CITY MASS WEDDING

Bhubaneswar-The city, which has been witnessing several pompous weddings albeit every day, experienced a special mass marriage ceremony of 25 couples on Sunday. It was organised by city-based social organisation Prayas.Like normal marriages, local people, volunteers, relatives and friends of brides and grooms came dancing to the tunes of different songs played during the marriage procession up to the Ram Mandir. All 25 grooms came in separate cars designed with flowers. The organisers had arranged 25 mandaps for the mass marriage ceremony.

As some couples had no family supporters, activists and some noted personalities attended the ceremony as fathers or mothers of the grooms and brides respectively. Brahmins from Puri were invited to conduct religious rituals during the marriage. A few saints of Khandagiri Magha Mela were also seen attending the ceremony and blessing the newlywed couples. Former Chief Minister and senior Congress leader Janaki Ballabh Patnaik, former Minister and BJP senior leader Biswa Bhushan Harichandan, former Minister Panchanan Kanungo, Viswa Hindu Parishad leader, former diplomat Abasar Beuria and several distinguished personalities of the city attended the ceremony.
Prayas chairman and senior lawyer Bana Mohanty said they had received applications for 36 marriages, but finally 25 marriages could be finalised. “We had scrutinised the applications and then tested their blood for its grouping. After all formalities the mass marriage took place,” said Mohanty.
